ALCOHOL ABUSE

THE ALCOHOL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH COUNCIL - DEVELOPING PEOPLE AND ORGANISATIONS GRANTS

The scheme - money is available for projects outside the responsibility of central or local government agencies and services and which develop the capacity of people and organisations to address alcohol issues. Projects will need to meet “an accepted and urgent need and not duplicate existing provision”. Priority will be given to projects that address the Government’s Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy published in March 2004.
(In addition to this grant there is a Small Grants programme tackling similar issues, where applications can be for up to £5,000 and can be made at any time.)

The overall aims of the Developing People and Organisations Grants programme are:

  • Improving practice by developing knowledge, skills and motivation; improving alcohol-related practice of both specialist and generic workers within the voluntary sector.
  • Influencing change, translating evidence into policy and practice.
  • Promoting organisational development, working through organisations to facilitate cultural change.
  • Evaluation and replicating what works elsewhere. A lack of rigour in the approach to dissemination and evaluation is a major reason why applications to this programme fail.

The 2007 priorities are to:

  • Investigate ways of intervening to reduce hazardous or harmful drinking in universities or other educational establishments with a focus on brief interventions and/or institutional policy.
  • Look at protective factors in young people as well as their motivation for risky drinking and different patterns of risk taking behaviour, including combining the use of alcohol with illicit drugs or sexual experimentation.
  • Explore and describe drinking within the home and other non-public drinking venues including patterns, attitudes, values, purchasing and influences on family and social life (not just harmful patterns or problem drinking families).
  • Investigate the link between drinking, health and crime. Develop different measures of drinking behaviour which better predict the likelihood of future harm, e.g. alcohol related crime and violence or alcohol dependence.
  • Look at the role marketing activities have played in changing peoples’ drinking patterns, particularly binge drinking. Specifically the influence of advertising, new media, new product development, point of sale promotions and price promotions should be examined, both individually and collectively.
  • Summarise high-quality evidence relating to effective and cost effective public policy, including taxation, price and availability. Consider all barriers to implementation.

Amount - grants range from £5,000 to £50,000.
Contact - full details of the application process are available at www.aerc.org.uk/grantsHow.htm
or contact AERC, Room 178, Queen Anne Business Centre, 28 Broadway, London,SW1H 9JX Tel: 020 7340 9502. The Government’s Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy is available at www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/strategy/work_areas/alcohol_misuse/index.asp

BUSINESS GATEWAY WEBSITE

The new Business Gateway web site http://www.bgateway.com/ is now live. The site has been re-branded for Scotland and contains over 10,000 pages of content covering business information, interactive tools and directories to help start and grow businesses.
Although aimed primarily at the business sector, the information could be of use to voluntary organisations, particularly those employing staff. There are sections on IT, health and safety, premises, finance and employing people.

NEW MAIL SERVICE COULD SAVE £20K

Charities could save the equivalent of a salary each year by switching to a new mail tariff, according to the Royal Mail. The company's Mailsort service uses a barcode and a computer-readable typeface on mailings. It is cheaper to process because it eliminates hand sorting. Charities that use the service are charged up to 2p less per item. The RNLI saved £18,615 last year by moving supporter mailings to machine-able mail, and the National Trust saved £20,000 in postage.
