The Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education in Dundee held its fifth, one-day conference for senior school pupils on Friday, September 26, 2014.

The College, a centre of excellence in the Study of Islam and Muslims, tailored the conference specifically for fifth and sixth-year pupils from secondary schools in the city with the aim of opening up debate on important and topical subjects led by academic experts in their field.

The four main subjects discussed were: Globalisation and Multiculturalism, Islam and Muslims, Islam and Cloning as well as Women and Islam.

Principal and Vice Chancellor of the Al-Maktoum College, Dr Hossein Godazgar welcomed the 29 young delegates from six schools: Menzieshill High, Braeview Academy, Baldragon Academy, Grove Academy, Harris Academy and Morgan Academy.

“We selected issues that would not only interest the senior pupils but also stimulate discussion and produce lots of questions for which we had to supply the answers,” he said.

“There is no doubt that the pupils have their own views on the topics chosen and about which they may be uncertain, or even concerned.

“We were extremely pleased to organise such an event again this year in conjunction with Dundee City Council’s Education Department.

“The conference forms part of our aim to engage and serve the local community, which we regard as a key part of our work in our role as educators in a diverse and multicultural world.”

Dundee City Council Education convener, councillor Stewart Hunter said:

“This is a valuable experience for our pupils. It is important for young people today to develop a wide knowledge of the world and an understanding of diverse beliefs and cultures.”

Director of Education, Mr Michael Wood, opened the event.
