After a week of mouthwatering foodie events across the county, the Taste of Angus Festival will finish on Mothering Sunday with a free indoor market showcasing the very best of local food and drink.

On Sunday, 26 March, The Food Life is holding a special Spring Food Festival at Strathmore Mart in Forfar, complete with a food and drink market, street food vendors and a pop-up restaurant. “What a great way to bring the Taste of Angus Festival to a close,” said Jillian McEwan of The Food Life, the local community benefit group who are organising the event. “You can sip cocktails while browsing for fresh seafood, handmade chocolates, Arbroath Smokies, Forfar Bridies and freshly-baked artisan bread.

“Or how about enjoying a unique lunch at our pop-up restaurant or taking your pick from the street food village, featuring a mobile patisserie, delicious vegan dishes and wood fired pizzas? And finish off with a glass of fizz from Tipple in a Tuk Tuk, Angus’ latest food and drink innovation – a three-wheeled prosecco & gin van.”

Hamish’s Hogs from Arbroath is one of the many local street food vendors participating in the Spring Food Festival. “We’ll be serving locally-sourced spit roast Angus pigs on a brioche bun with a choice of sauces and salad,” said Martyn Moore of Hamish’s Hogs. “Our pigs are from Guthrie Batchelor, whose family has been farming on the east coast of Scotland since the 1990s and who also owns Flemings The Butchers.

“We’re delighted to be involved in this year’s Taste of Angus Festival,” continued Martyn.

“The Spring Food Market is a fabulous opportunity to discover the fabulous tastes and flavours of Angus. We are so lucky to live and work in Angus, where there is such great produce on our doorstep and where farmers with passion and a wealth of knowledge have created some of the best breeds of cattle and pigs that Scotland can offer.”

As well as the many culinary treats on offer, the market will feature a range of activities for children, including the chance to take a ride on the smoothie bike, listen to fascinating stories from a traditional fishwife, meet spring lambs, goat kids and rare breed piglets – and even say hello to Oor Wullie.

“There will also be opportunities to find out more about community groups and charities which are involved in the local food scene, such as Food For Free (Carnoustie), The Slow Food Movement and Hope Organics, who will all be doing demonstrations,” added Jillian McEwan.

“If you love to support local and enjoy a great day out with fabulous food and drink, don’t miss this free event.”
