Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce announced its 2018 Enterprise Partnership with Coca-Cola Enterprises to deliver the 5by20 Dundee programme in 2018 and beyond. An event was held in November 2017 to celebrate the previous programme participants at Dundee City Chambers attended by the Depute Lord Provost and Cllr Lynne Short.
In 2017 alone, the programme delivered 10 Business and Enterprise Programmes to 56 participants. 70% of these participants have successfully started-up their own enterprise or entered in to self-employment, creating around 45 new jobs. In addition, the programme welcomed over £70,000 of in-kind support from many local and national businesses and experts who willingly give their time and support for the advancement of Women in Business.
Dundee and the wider Tay Cities Region are in the midst of a period of economic regeneration and the sense of ambition and energy is palpable. It is vital that all parts of our community are given the opportunity to be part of this regeneration. For many women, running their own business is a means to independence, confidence and participation in their communities. It gives a real sense of self-direction and empowers those women, their families and those around them to aspire to do more for themselves.
In Scotland, if the numbers of women-led businesses increased to equal those of men, our national bank balance would grow by at least 5% or £7.6 billion. Small and medium-sized businesses are essential to economic recovery, and female-led enterprises will play a key role in this area. However, access to enterprise education, training and support is the key to supporting this growth.
Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce CEO Alison Henderson said “We are looking forward to helping further develop the programme and support the creation and growth of women-led businesses in the region, helping manage national progression. Stimulating economic growth and job creation in Dundee is vital in building capacity and capability of businesses and supporting those in our communities to create their own futures.”
Jim Fox, Head of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola European Partners said, ‘We are very excited by the progress of our 5 by 20 programme in Dundee. Thanks to our many fantastic supporters in the city, we now know how best to use this international programme in a UK environment to make a really positive impact on gender inequality. Partnering with Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce will enable us to accelerate this initiative and economically empower many more women in 2018.
In 2018, this new Enterprise Partnership will sustain the delivery of the 2018, while increasing the participation numbers, and provide the support of the Chamber to not only deliver the programme locally, but look to increase and expand delivery in the future. We look forward to welcoming the 5by20 programme participants into the Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce network.
