Shaping the Future of Global Technical Textiles with Scottish Heritage
At Scott & Fyfe, we’re immensely proud of our legacy. Our roots in the Scottish textile industry stretch back 160 years, starting from our linen works in Tayport, Fife. Today, we are known internationally for our high-performance technical textiles and materials technology, creating solutions that support industries as diverse as agriculture, automotive, and construction.
Earlier this year our forward-thinking approach saw us take home the award for International Business at the Chamber Champion Awards. With 94% of our products reaching clients as far as New Zealand, Australia, Israel, and the USA, we’ve proven that a Scottish company can not only engage in global trade but also lead in innovation, sustainability, and social responsibility.
Understanding the impact global trade can have is significant and so we’ve been thrilled the Chamber has established the International Academy, which will help more Dundee businesses get practical knowledge and advice to help support international trade.
Expanding Markets Through Tailored International Development
Our international expansion was no accident. We have planned every step carefully, staying adaptable while deeply understanding the unique cultures and needs of each market we enter. Over the last two years, our exports have surged by 51%, and our operating profits have grown significantly, from £143,000 in 2022 to £1.7 million in 2023. This growth has not only preserved local jobs but also generated an additional £2.2 million in cash flow, strengthening our foundation in Tayport.
A key element of this success has been listening to our partners worldwide and tailoring our products and communications to meet their preferences. Our multilingual team helps bridge cultural and linguistic gaps, and we customise our offerings to make sure our clients feel seen and understood.
Navigating Global Challenges and Local Support
The world of international business is constantly evolving, with challenges ranging from technological advancements to geopolitical uncertainties.
At Scott & Fyfe, we stay agile by combining our design expertise with an environmentally conscious approach, balancing our client needs with a commitment to sustainability. This dual focus enables us to build enduring, mutually beneficial relationships across markets.
For Dundee businesses looking to expand internationally, support is available through the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce’s International Academy. This initiative offers valuable guidance to businesses seeking to enter new markets or strengthen existing ones, helping bring Scottish talent and innovation to a global stage.
Being part of a globally impactful business rooted in Scottish heritage is incredibly rewarding. As we look to the future, we will continue seeking new growth opportunities, all while honoring our legacy and supporting a more sustainable, responsible way of doing business worldwide.
