In Your Shoes - Alexis Wilkins

Hi, I’m Alexis, Heritage Portfolio’s Sales Executive and Event Designer at V&A Dundee.

We have had such an exciting start to May with the opening of V&A Dundee’s newest exhibition: Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk. The exhibition will run through 5 January 2025, so be sure to come see it before then!

I joined Heritage Portfolio in February 2023 as Event Designer and took on the role of Sales Executive in August. Based on-site at V&A Dundee, I am responsible for leading on incoming enquiries, hosting site visits and planning meetings, and seeing events through to fruition, ensuring our clients’ expectations are met and exceeded. I also work to create and build on client relationships around the UK, attending and hosting networking events in the region.

My favourite part of the job? Hard to pick just one… But taste testing the incredible food our chefs create for our clients is certainly up there! They are artists in the kitchen.

Monday: No Days Off

Call me crazy, but I love working a bank holiday. As so many people are out of the office, I find it the perfect time to hunker down and file through my to-do list.

Today’s list included planning a FAM Trip, chasing up event details, filing through emails, and organising a new event package (stay tuned)! Additionally, I am preparing for tomorrow’s Behind Closed Doors event with the Chamber which will invite attendees to network over tea, coffee, and pastries before heading into the fabulous Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk exhibition out of hours. It is sure to be a lovely Tuesday morning.

Tuesday: Crazy for Kimono

What better way to start your day than a Chamber of Commerce networking event with breakfast supplied by Heritage Portfolio? Headed into V&A Dundee for a 7am start this morning to prepare Tatha for our Behind Closed Doors event with Alison, Heather, and Glen. My lovely colleague Kate also joined us from Edinburgh this morning – always a welcomed visitor!

Hands down, this exhibition cannot be missed. It is truly unique and awe inspiring. Some of the most stunning fashion I have ever laid my eyes on, and the layout of the gallery space is incredible! Such an innovative team at V&A Dundee.

Kate and I were pulled into the photoshoot for Tatha’s new Kimono Inspired Afternoon Tea. After all the photos were taken by talented photographer Craig Heaslip, we had the pleasure of taste testing the new product. Do not miss this afternoon tea – it is so delicious. My favourites are the miso caramel white chocolate tart and the yuzu posset with black sesame biscuits. Will have to book to enjoy the full experience!

Wednesday: Never Standing Still

Another early morning with clients! We are hosting a big engagement party at the end of this month, and our Bride-To-Be wanted to test different table layouts while Tatha was empty. Moving tables and chairs is always a workout – great way to start the day if you can’t make it to the gym. Even better when your Bride-To-Be leaves happy and more excited for her big day!

The rest of my Wednesday was filled with site visits and event planning meetings. Something I love about this job is how every day is different from the last. Different clients, different meetings, different events. Lots of room for a diverse range of creativity. We live and breathe Heritage Portfolio’s motto: Never Standing Still!

Thursday: Planning Ahead

More appointments and site visits today. Pinning down details for events in 2025 already? While that feels like ages away, it is crazy to think we are nearly halfway through 2024. Time flies… And it’s always good to be prepared!

Less than one week away from our Familiarisation event. I am so excited to have our clients in to see the Kimono exhibition and experience some delectable bites at our Japanese inspired reception. Finalising menu cards and decoration today – the devil is in the details!

Treated myself to a delicious goat cheese and cranberry baguette with rocket and pumpkin seeds for lunch in Tatha. Could not help but get a sweet treat after! They are to die for, how could I resist?

Friday: Soak Up The Sun

Sunniest city in Scotland! What a gloriously sunny Spring Friday. Walked into work early this morning to relish in the weather and smell the freshly cut grass across the road. Was greeted with a coffee and pumpkin scone upon entering Tatha – feeling absolutely spoiled.

No meetings today, so I am focused on finalising event schedules and filling my diary with appointments for June. I am always looking to bring new clients into our wonderful venue to plan their next unforgettable conference, reception, or dinner. Now that we have Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk as an add-on to our package offers, how could anyone decline? Such a unique experience for local and international clients alike. Do not hesitate to get in touch if this sounds like something you may be interested in! I never say no to a coffee, cake, and chat about potential business in V&A Dundee.

Nothing like shaking off the week with a long walk in the park. Spring is by far my favourite season. You can’t beat the colours in the trees, smells of the blossoms, and songs of the birds. Looking forward to a weekend spent outdoors!
