In Your Shoes - Colin Thomson

Hi, my name is Colin Thomson and I am the Distillery General Manager at Angus Alchemy, just outside of Carnoustie. Having spent most of my career working in food retail I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with the team at the distillery. I have really enjoyed my first 5 weeks in the business and am excited to see what the future brings for us all so why not come pay us a visit.

Monday

Myself, the directors, and the team get together to discuss the weekend just passed where we attended the Ayr International Air Festival, Blairgowrie and Rattray Highland games and had a very busy weekend at the distillery with the Open Doors event too. Production plans agreed for the weeks ahead for our 6 moonshines and 3 gins. Our Doddie5 Mistaken Identity Moonshine proved to be very popular over the weekend and its great to be able to support this charity as well as the Paul “Chippie” Lawrie Foundation and the (Harley) Davidson Legacy Foundation.

Afternoon meeting with Meghann Logue at Angus Alive to organise our support for the Winter Show in November at Forfar Meffen Museum and Art Gallery.

Follow up meetings with local companies regarding new signage for our distillery and some great improvements on the horizon.

Tuesday

Great to see the progress being made at the Halfway Houses, right across the car park from the distillery, and we completed the planning for welcome packs for all potential guests from the distillery with the houses planning to open in the week ahead.

Delighted to be invited to, and attend, the Chamber Awards Lunch at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel with Campbell Archibald. A great afternoon and very worthy winners of the awards. Another opportunity for me to meet some new people in businesses across Dundee and Angus with some plans already in place for working together.

Dropped off 3000 leaflets to Carnoustie Scouts to be delivered to every house in Monifieth and support their upcoming trip with thanks to Darryl at Winter Simpson for the printing.

Wednesday

Continual planning with our events team for a golf day we are hosting at Kingennie at the end of September as well as the upcoming tasting sessions at the distillery. Some large groups coming for tastings and tours this month which takes some additional planning to make sure everyone has a great time and all needs are catered for. This is one of the areas I have been really impressed with during my time in the company and our distillery is a great place to work and visit.

Myself and Phil then travel down to London for an event on Thursday however take the opportunity for a spot of site seeing/content creation for our social media teams, an ad-hoc trip along the Thames on a speedboat is definitely the highlight!!

Thursday

Myself, Phil, and Rhia from the Distillery plus another guest (Lee) have the privilege of attending the Doddie’s Lions Long Lunch at the Connaught Rooms in Central London. A fantastic event for an amazing charity and we are very proud to provide miniature bottles of our Banoffee Moonshine (Doddie’s favourite dessert) for the 200 guests in attendance. I’m not a massive rugby fan however appreciated the former Lion’s and their achievements. Lots of money raised across the afternoon and I met loads of interesting people and gained many new contacts as we continue to build the Angus Alchemy business, really excited at some of the possible collaborations in the future. Being recognised as one of “The Moonshine Guys” is becoming a regular occurrence.

Friday

Mainly travelling back from London with Phil and Rhia however took the opportunity of a train journey to continue to work through some opportunities on the way home. Branding, packaging, costs, marketing all being discussed and some really strong ideas and plans put in place to be followed up on with the rest of the team.

Delighted that our 4 new RTD cocktails are almost complete so look out for some exciting updates on these. Starting to look forward to the week ahead with a full diary of calls and meetings on Monday then I am away to Edinburgh with an event by Scotland Food and Drink.

Never a dull moment at Angus Alchemy, come in and taste the moonshine….it’s lovely!!
