In Your Shoes - Emma Willson

I’m Emma Willson, a career Operations Manager providing all-round business support to service-based entrepreneurs. I work with ambitious business owners who need someone sharp, dependable, and curious by their side to keep things moving, improve what’s not working, and clear the chaos behind the scenes.

My offering blends strategic insight with hands-on support. I work in close partnership with you, spotting what needs doing, keeping momentum, and making sure nothing slips through the cracks. I bring clarity, autonomy, and momentum to your business. Our trusted VAs handle the admin and routine tasks; I take care of the bigger picture and keep the day-to-day ticking.

Whether you need retained support or help to execute on a one-off project, I’ll help you streamline, stabilise, and move forward. If you’re growing fast, stuck in the weeds, or just need a partner who gets it, I’m here to help.

Monday – Not just virtual support

Offering remote business support doesn’t mean I never get involved in person! One of my clients runs a mobile photography studio, and since he was working nearby, I popped along to see him in action. It was brilliant to experience the service from a customer’s perspective; it helps me manage business enquiries more effectively when I’ve seen the full workflow first-hand.

Another client - who I work with on a flexible, project-by-project basis - recently asked me to manage building renovations on a 22-unit tenement. This week I conducted site visits with the main contractors I’d invited to tender. It's really satisfying to support across a whole range of projects and businesses.

Tuesday – Networking and learning

As many small business owners know, your network is everything. For me, personal connection and referrals are just as valuable as social media or paid ads.

I LOVE networking; not just for work, but because I’m naturally curious. I enjoy hearing people’s stories and learning about different businesses. At this morning’s event, I made a few suggestions to someone during a chat. She emailed later to say it had inspired her… that’s absolutely the best part of networking for me.

Wednesday – Productivity Time Box

Today’s been a bit of everything across several clients. Mapping a new online booking system for a paddleboarding company; board administration for a charity; invoices for a retainer engineering client, and processing pension payments for an architecture firm!

I also checked in with a regular client who wanted to sense-check her new ‘Home Retreat’ idea. We had a 15-minute chat, and she left with confirmation her idea was cracking, and a plan for promotion. Sometimes the smallest tasks (and quickest wins) make the biggest difference in someone’s week.

Thursday – Systems Audit

Kicked off with a new client today who’s looking for technical support. After an initial 1:1 (via networking, naturally), I had a broad sense of her business. Today was about getting into the detail - understanding her vision, operations, current systems, client journey, and where she’s aiming to grow.

I suggested a platform that will scale with her business and stay manageable once I’ve set it up. I love helping people get started, and if they want to keep me on, great - but setting someone up for success is a win in itself.

Friday – Presenting

This morning, I presented at the Perthshire Businesswomen’s Network on ‘Productivity and Time Management’ - one of my favourite topics! I could talk all day, but that wouldn’t be very on-theme…

I shared a few tools and techniques, but mostly I emphasised the importance of having a system, whether that’s a digital app or pen and paper. And write everything down! As David Allen says: “Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them.”

I also run 3-hour workshops on this, and the group discussions are always fascinating.

Weekend – Reset & Reflect

It’s small business life to always be a little bit ‘work mode’, but I do try to maximise my weekend with fun and time out time to reset. Long runs help me clear my head (marathon training is humbling!) and I often come back with a dozen ideas, all recorded via slightly breathless voice notes.

I also use the weekend to look back at what went well, tie up any loose ends, and plan for the week ahead. It’s a quieter kind of productivity, but just as valuable.
