Health and Wellbeing Performance Begins With Purer Hydration

“Drink more water.”

The advice is so familiar it almost disappears into the background. But what often goes unsaid is this: hydration isn’t only about how much we drink. It’s about what’s in the water itself.

Athletes know this instinctively. A Harris Poll commissioned by Abbott in 2021 found that 93% of people who exercise intensely recognize hydration is critical for performance and recovery. Yet nearly half still believe fizzy or energy drinks are a good post-workout option. We talk a lot about drinking, but much less about the quality of the drinks we consume.

PFAS “forever chemicals.” Microplastics

Today, both tap and bottled water are carrying unwelcome passengers. PFAS “forever chemicals.” Microplastics. Heavy metals.

A World Health Organization study in 2022 highlighted growing evidence that PFAS exposure is associated with weakened immune response, reduced vaccine effectiveness, and potential links to certain cancers. A Harvard study in 2018 tied PFAS to increased cholesterol, thyroid disease, kidney, and testicular cancers.

Microplastics are no less troubling. A 2022 review published in Environmental Health Perspectives warned of potential impacts on the digestive, respiratory, and reproductive systems, with some studies linking exposure to low birth weight and hormone disruption. And in 2024, Mayo Clinic researchers reported microplastics lodged in human arterial plaques, with their presence correlating to higher rates of heart attack, stroke, and premature death.

The science is still developing, but the pattern is clear: substances once thought invisible are now linked to very noticeable health outcomes.

Consider the irony

Consider the irony. Many of us spend hundreds on shoes engineered for marginal gains. We hire trainers, count macros, track recovery, and invest in sleep technology. Yet the most basic fuel—water—we source from a tap or plastic bottle with little thought.

It’s like buying a high-performance car and filling it with whatever fuel comes to hand. It runs, but never at its best.

Electrolytes are the other half of the story. Minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium play a crucial role in regulating energy, muscle recovery, and focus. But electrolytes only deliver if the water carrying them is free from pollutants. Otherwise, the body is forced to filter contaminants while trying to rehydrate.

SuperiorOsmosis™

This is why Bluewater developed SuperiorOsmosis™, a second-generation reverse osmosis system. Reverse osmosis has long been regarded as the gold standard for removing contaminants. SuperiorOsmosis™ improves on it by:

  • Removing up to 99% of pollutants, including PFAS, microplastics, and heavy metals.
  • Producing more clean water with less waste.

Bluewater systems featuring SuperiorOsmosis™ technology are available for your home now. If you are already dialling in your focus on training, recovery and nutrition as part of your wellness programme, isn’t it time to also invest in a top-tier hydration solution to match? The Bluewater Cleone is an all-in-one system, designed for convenient under-sink installation. After the reverse osmosis membrane has done the hard work to remove up to 99% of contaminants, a mineral filter replenishes essential trace minerals for optimum taste and hydration.
