In Your Shoes - James Burns

I’m James, the Systems Administrator here at the Chamber, and every week poses its own unique challenges! From the dreaded system bugs that never like to play nice, to the international document work that peaks in the late half of the year (we call that Tattie Season!), it's always a busy time.

The challenge is to create some order out of the chaos, so here’s a little look at what I got up to this week.

Monday

Mondays usually start with a bit of everything, and today was no different!

A few IT bugs to squash, a couple of helpdesk calls and emails, and a coffee or two. Today I also helped check through an Arab British Chamber of Commerce document that was quite different from our usual export paperwork, so that kept things interesting!

In between that, I set up one of the meeting rooms for a booking - making sure there were flasks for coffee and tea, mugs, and the all-important biscuits.

It’s a nice mix of things to kick the week off!

Tuesday

I spent some time today investigating some new software options to integrate with our current systems better, and to streamline a few of our processes.

I also spent some of today helping members with news submissions, and getting those listed on our website.

Outside of work on Tuesdays, I enjoy going to an indoor bouldering gym, which helps keep me fit, and also tests my problem-solving ability in a fun way!

Wednesday

Wednesdays may be the middle of the week, but they are anything but average!

Today was spent creating a piece of code to update all of our members in our system in order to futureproof them for any changes, and guarantee a smooth experience. Doing this manually would have cost several hours, which I was convinced was far too much of a commitment compared to writing some code to automate this with a REST API.

With the remainder of my time, I make some changes to procedures, to keep things relevant.

Thursday

Today was spent ensuring some of our records were up-to-date for office equipment, and there was some manual work to do in our booking systems.

I had some back and forth communication with one of our members who handles some of the external systems work that we do, and I created a document to keep track of all of my actions and tasks needing done.

I took a nice bike trip to the post box to deliver our international documents today too. Some fresh air to break up the office work really goes a long way!

Friday

Happy Friday!

After an intense week, the morning coffee today really hit the spot!

Today was all about preparing for the week ahead, and making sure no tasks are waiting on anything over the weekend. I made sure to prioritise my tasks that others may rely on, to cover all contingencies.

I spent some time looking into booking trials of new software that I investigated earlier in the week, and writing up some notes for meetings in the following week.

Once all of my work is done, my colleagues have given me homework to catch up on the newest episodes of The Celebrity Traitors over the weekend, since it has become the most popular topic of conversation recently.

All-in-all, a very varied week that's kept me busy and engaged!
