Monday - From Wi-Fi to Theatre

The week got off to a busy start. On Monday, the team travelled from Dundee to Stirling for an early morning takedown of a temporary wifi system we installed the week before, for the weekends festival at Helix Park. ‘Live at the Kelpies’ Once all packed down, it was back to the unit to unload, sort and then straight up to the Reid Hall in Forfar to finish setting up the lighting, sound, video and special effects for Nova Productions ‘We Will Rock You’ the Musical.

One minute we were dismantling equipment at a festival site, the next, we were rigging equipment for a theatre production.

Tuesday - Planning and Plotting

Tuesday started with some office-based admin, including emails and a range of other task. After that, we headed back up to the Reid Hall in Forfar to continue plotting the lighting and special effects for the performances taking place from Wednesday through to Saturday.

There was a lot of preparation involved to make sure everything was ready before the performances took to the stage. There is so much time and effort put into productions like this that many people don’t realise.

Wednesday - DACC Awards and Opening Night

Wednesday was a particular busy day. We started by setting up the AV equipment for Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, Chamber Champions Awards. This was a very good day for Grey Events specifically since our very own Ben, won two awards during the afternoon!! Once the awards were complete and packed away, there was no time to slow down - we went straight to Forfar to get ready for opening night of We Will Rock You.

Going from a corporate awards ceremony to a theatre production it really showed that no two days are the same / no two events are the same. It highlights the vast amount of work we do.

Thursday - Scottish Women’s Institute Conference

Thursday took us back to the Apex Hotel to set up for the SWI’s conference in Dundee that runs from Friday to Saturday. We setup all AV requirements including PA and cameras for filming. Once all was tested and ready to go, we headed back to Forfar for their second live performance of We Will Rock You.

Friday - A day of multiple events

Friday was one of the busiest days of the week. We had an early start supporting the SWI conference in the Apex Hotel providing technical support for keynote speakers, live demonstrations and a talent show taking place that evening. While this was running, the team were also preparing for several other events.

We setup a lighting and drape hire for a wedding at Verdant Works, prepared a projector and screen for a movie screening in Arbroath and completed a stage and sound setup for Dundee universities freshers events. Once all that was done, we were yet again; back up to the Reid Hall for the 3rd performance of We Will Rock You.

It was probably the best example of how varied our work can be, several different events, several different times and locations with a varied technical requirement.

Saturday - Conference, Theatre and Takedowns

Saturday brought another full day at the Apex Hotel for the final day of the Scottish Women’s Institute in Dundee. One that was finished, we packed down and unloading the van at our unit to sort all the equipment used. Meanwhile, there was an afternoon performance of We Will Rock You on in Forfar during their matinee show.

After that we all headed back up to Forfar for Nova Productions final performance of We Will Rock You, that finished roughly around 22:15 and we derived all equipment that night. Finally finishing around 1:30am.

After such a busy and long week, the team now deserve a good break. So, it was home time, off on Sunday and back to work to start a fresh week on Monday.
