7 Steps to Personal Wellbeing

Date & Time

Wednesday, Aug 19, 2020 at 12:30 - Wednesday, Sep 30, 2020 at 13:30

The psychological effects of lockdown, coupled with financial fears and workplace changes are likely to aggravate work-related stress already suffered by many people, according to Dr Ayse Basak Cinar, leading local personal development and health coach, based at Dundee University.

Dr Basak went on to tell the Courier:“Stress due to work, if left untreated, can cause serious general and mental health problems for employees, along with serious drops in productivity and costing a huge amount for both private companies and governments. In today’s crisis environment, leaders who can show they care about individual employees and provide mental health guidance right now will boost employee engagement and motivation, that will have direct positive impact on business to survive and thrive.”

Because we know this is such a key issue for many people working across local businesses, we've designed a free 7 week virtual programme to bring key experts from around the region covering topics from mindset to mindfulness, resilience to kindness. Open to people across Dundee & Angus - with a limited number of spaces available for this first intake - the programme will also form a support network with attendees and our experts who can speak openly about any issues they are experiencing.

Outline Programme, 12.30pm - 1.30pm:

Wed 19 August- The power of having a Growth Mindset with Jamie McBrearty, YMindset

Wed 26 August- The impact of Kindness with Jen Wood, Jen Wood Wellbeing and The Yard Wellbeing Consultant

Wed 2 September - Why Mindfulness with Lesley Howells, Maggie's Centre

Wed 9 September - Volunteering is good for you with Alison Myles, Angus Carers Centre

Wed 16 September - Being Resilient with Dawn Walton, Think it Change it

Wednesday 23 September - Making Exercise & Nutrition simple (speaker tbc)

Wednesday 30 September - The benefits of Green Space with Dr Viola Marx, Dundee Green Health Partnership

Along with the Virtual Programme we'll also encourage the group to connect with each other and share how they are doing between sessions. There will be access to a private closed online group where attendees and our speakers can share further knowledge. It'll also provide the opportunity to speak openly about any issues people are experiencing and seek further support. During the programme, we'll also be signposting to further organisations where more specialist help and support can be accessed.

Alison Myles, Angus Carers Centre

Alison has been CEO of Angus Carers Centre, based in Arbroath for the last 7 years. Having graduated from Northern College in Dundee in 1988 Alison has worked in a variety of roles such as being a Detached Youth Worker in Dundee City Centre,  a number of Community Development and Community Centre Managers posts in various housing schemes across the city and working for CAIR Scotland (now part of Hillcrest Futures) as a Senior Project Worker before being promoted to Head of Services/HR.

Throughout all of this journey her core belief is that people in their own communities are the best to know what their community needs but sometimes other resources need to be added.

A useful phrase coined by https://www.nurturedevelopment.org/ is that services should be “On Tap, not on Top”. This is why Alison is committed to supporting people to find the right volunteering experience for them, hopefully within their own local area where relationships and new friendships develop far beyond the scope of their ‘volunteering’ role.

Angus Carers Centre delivers a service across Angus by a team of 22 paid workers and up to 70 volunteers. They are part of a Scottish network of Carers Centres who support each other to “Make Caring Visible”, by supporting unpaid carers, of all ages to get the recognition and support they need

Dawn Walton, Think it Change it

Dawn’s speciality is communication, solving problems and getting the best out of people - all at the same time. She gets your head out of the way so you can be the best version of you.

She spent 20+ years in the call centre industry, going from working on the phones doing technical support, to setting up and running a training department, and on to implementing a quality management system for call centres across the globe. She also ran a 500 seat callcentre and returned the most profit and highest staff satisfaction in it's history.

Her career focus has been on helping businesses and their employees grow. She had a hugely successful career and family

But...all was not right. Thanks to an abusive childhood she felt worthless, and hated herself.

Then she came across a therapist in Harley Street in London who she was told could sort her head out in just a few sessions. He was the founder of a relatively unheard-of approach called Cognitive Hypnotherapy. Everything changed after her first session and she decided that she had to learn how to do what he did.

After training as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist she left her senior management position and a six figure salary in BT to help people clear the mental blocks that get in the way of their success. Over a 7-year period she has helped more than 850 people worldwide overcome the things that get in the way of them being the best they can be. She helps with problems from depression and anxiety, to addictions and childhood issues, to physical issues like Chronic Fatigue and IBS.

She is passionate about helping as many people as possible realise we’re all screwed up, and that doesn't have to limit your life. She does this through workshops, speaking engagements, books (4 so far), groups and 1-1 sessions.
