Reducing Food Waste with Zero Waste Scotland

Date & Time

Monday, Mar 25, 2019 at 15:30 - 18:30

Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce and Zero Waste Scotland are hosting an event with award-winning local Chef Adam Newth at The Tayberry Restaurant in Dundee, launching a project focussed on reducing food waste in the Dundee, Fife and Angus region.

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO THOSE IN THE FOOD AND DRINK INDUSTRY.

At the event Adam will share how he embraces a zero waste ethos in his restaurants, and we’ll taste some of his amazing creations which demonstrate just how he does that.

Passionate people from Scottish hospitality businesses will also share their experience of implementing food waste reduction strategies, which have saved them money and reduced their carbon footprint, with support from Zero Waste Scotland.

In Scotland we throw away 1.35 million tonnes of food each year. The cost of this food waste in Scottish restaurants is estimated at £64 million and two-thirds of it is avoidable. Food waste not only translates into lost profits but also into carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. In fact, if global food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter behind China and the United States.

Zero Waste Scotland aims to reduce the food waste mountain by 33% by 2025 - working directly with local businesses, schools, colleges, universities and community groups in this area.

Come along with your thinking caps on, as there will be time focussed on Zero Waste Scotland understanding the issues that face local food and drink businesses, and what would help you contribute to reducing food waste.

Please note that this event is open to those within the food and drinks industry only, please do not register to attend the event if you are working outwith this sector.

Zero Waste Scotland exists to create a society where resources are valued and nothing is wasted. The Scottish Government have set an ambitious target to reduce food waste by 33% by 2025, which has become the remit of the Food and Drink Team at Zero Waste Scotland. This new regional project is the first of its kind. It’s hoped that focussing on a region which is renowned for its food production and hospitality establishments, accelerates us towards reaching the food waste goals. This is a great opportunity for this region to be at the forefront of food waste reduction in Scotland.
