Join us during Mental Health Awareness Week as we hear from two expert speakers discussing the benefits of green spaces for mental and physical health along with mindfulness in nature.

Speakers

Dr Viola Marx, Dundee’s Green Health Partnership Coordinator.

The Dundee Green Health Partnership is funded by Scottish Natural Heritage and aims to make more use of Scotland’s outdoors for physical, mental and social health benefits and wellbeing. This partnership brings together NHS Tayside, Dundee City Council, Universities, the Third Sector and local communities. With a PhD in Psychology she connects the healthcare sector with local third sector nature-based interventions and encourages people to access the outdoors more during every day activities to help people reap the benefits of the outdoors and stay healthy.


Lesley Howells, Maggie's Centre 

Lesley Howells is the Lead Psychologist for the Maggie’s network of twenty-five psychosocial cancer centres across the UK (www.maggiescentres.org), Hong Kong, Barcelona and Tokyo. She is also Centre Head for Maggie’s Dundee and Consultant Clinical Psychologist.

Lesley’s responsibilities for the Maggie’s network include: governance for psychological thinking and practice for all staff groups including non-psychologists. Her remit also includes developing and monitoring the Maggie’s evidence based cancer support programme, development and delivery of staff training, psychology supervision and professional leadership and the management of the Maggie’s Research Portfolio. She is an NHS Accredited Trainer in Advanced Communication, Accredited Mindfulness Teacher and has specialist expertise in the teaching and supervision of NHS Specialist Palliative Care professionals.

 

Since qualifying in 1991 her research and clinical focus has been families, individuals and couples facing life-changing trauma and transitions, primarily those prompted by changes in physical health (e.g. families with cystic fibrosis, diabetes). Before joining Maggie’s in 2014, she was the Clinical Health Psychology Lead for NHS Dumfries and Galloway.
