ANGUSalive, the culture, sport and leisure charitable trust for Angus, is delighted to announce the winners of its Meffan Museum & Art Gallery Winter Exhibition 2017; as awarded at an open evening reception at the Meffan on Friday 17 November.
The purchase prize of £1,500 for professional artists was awarded to:

Anna S King – “Thirty Six Winds” (Medium: Mixed Media)
Bill Taylor – “Forth” (Medium: Screen Print)
Sigrid Shone – “Seagull III” (Medium: Screenprint)
The celebrated Colin Dakers Memorial Purchase Prize of £1,000 was won by: Julia Gardener for her “Slate Study” (Medium: MDF and Card Construction).
The annual Meffan Winter Exhibition invites professional and non-professional artists resident in Scotland to showcase their work and have their work purchased to enhance the Angus Council art collection, which the charity ANGUSalive cares for and manages. This year, the judging panel for the purchase prize included two of our 2016 prize winners; Allan Watson and Julia Gardiner, as well as our visual arts officer, Gill Ross. The Colin Dakers Memorial Prize is chosen by his family.

“We were struck by the variety and quality of the artwork in the Meffan Winter Exhibition 2017. We chose the work, not based on our personal tastes, but looking at what artwork we’d like for the people of Angus to enjoy for generations to come. For the Purchase Prize Winners, we chose “Forth” by Bill Taylor for its abstract quality that echoes the sense of space and distance one experiences on the beaches of Angus. “Thirty Six Winds” by Anna S. King is unlike anything in the Angus art collection and we loved the tactile and poetic nature of this piece. “Farm Buildings Kinnel, Angus” by Rodger Insh is an inventive composition contrasting old and new in his jewel like painting which transforms the stillness of everyday life into something magical. In “Seagull III” Sigrid Shone has meticulously captured the movement and characteristics of this iconic bird in her monochromatic screen print.”
Additionally there is a public vote to select the winning work by an amateur artist and this will be announced on Tuesday 19 December on the ANGUSalive Museum & Gallery Facebook page.

“There was an exciting array of artworks submitted to the ANGUSalive Meffan Winter Exhibition 2017 and we thank everyone for their entries. There is definitely something to suit everyone; from impasto landscapes where the textures of the Scottish countryside are captured in layers of paint, poetic delicate pieces carefully constructed in thread and fine paper, sculptures with a striking sense of life and movement as well as brightly coloured enthralling oils on canvas and captivating screen prints – please come and enjoy these works at the exhibition in Forfar which runs from today [Saturday 18 November] until Saturday 30 December.ʺ
ANGUSalive’s Museum and Galleries are also displaying works by a wide variety of artists across its museums this winter; including Times-acclaimed Kirsty Lorenz showcasing her ‘Floresce’ exhibition at Montrose Museum until 16 December. Scottish visual artist, Ingrid Fraser has unveiled her beautiful landscape oil work at Brechin Town House Museum where you can enjoy it until 20 January 2018. At Signal Tower Museum, Arbroath Garry Brown’s ‘The Voices in the Mist’ showcases his distinctive driftwood sculptures until 31 December 2017.
