As local families count down to the school holidays, Dundee Science Centre is preparing to go up, up and away this Summer, taking visitors on a star-struck journey of discovery.
Blasting off from Thursday 29 June through to Sunday 10 September 2017, visitors will embark on a voyage to the moon and back, with a host of stellar activities, shows and exhibitions.
Astronauts have been traveling to space for over 50 years but why do they go, and how do they survive? These questions and more will be addressed through the fun and interactive “One Small Step” family show, running regularly each day.
Meanwhile, another family show will focus on ‘Rocket Science’, where visitors will learn what makes rockets fly fast enough to escape Earth’s gravity, experience a mini rocket launch, and explore why it’s such a noisy business!
Again featuring from 29 June through to 10 September is ‘Seeing the Universe in all its light’, where older children and adults can discover the ’Big Telescopes Family’ through a fascinating, interactive exhibition by Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Featuring scale models and astounding images, this touring exhibition will cover ground and space-based astronomy.
Calum McAndrew, Exhibition and Community Engagement Officer said, “We’ve come a long way since Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space over 50 years ago, with astronauts now living on the International Space Station all year round. At ‘Boom! Bang! Blast Off!’ we’ll be exploring space travel and visitors can learn how astronauts survive in space, and why they go on these life-changing missions.’

For younger space tots, there will be a Mars sandpit where mini astronauts can step through an airlock onto the surface of Mars for photo opportunities and play on the sandy surface of Mars. Meanwhile, ‘Astrotos’ will allow children aged three to five to blast off on a journey of discovery, learning basic numeracy and fun space facts as they go.
