On Valentine’s Day 11 visitors from businesses across the area descended on the Michelin site to find out more about the workforce, with a view to meeting and greeting potential employees that might fit roles in their own organisations.

The visit was organised by Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce and the aim was to highlight the talented workforce within the site from tyre production to engineering.

Chamber CEO Alison Henderson said: “I’m part of the Michelin Action Group and the work being done by the partners under the Michelin-Scotland Alliance is very powerful and will give the site an exciting future, and of course is seeking to support the Michelin workforce as part of that.

In the short term, my focus is on the local community and retaining jobs & talent in Dundee & Angus where possible, as well as looking to maximise the opportunities to boost local businesses with the skills of the Michelin workforce.

“This is the first time we have brought employers into Michelin for a meeting of this type – I am pleased to say the response was very positive and there are plans to repeat this visit with those who couldn’t make it, and do a wider employer event too.

It’s important to the Chamber to support our members, and the wider business community too, and help them investment in their future.“

Head of personnel Donald Mackenzie said: “Thank you to the employers who came along to see what we do as we look for great opportunities for our workforce.

“To have companies like Stagecoach, Ravensby Glass and GE Baker Hughes interested in what we do with a view to offering employees a job is really positive.

“The employer event is part of a range of work we are undertaking to make sure that every employee has a positive destination.”

The companies in attendance were: Albacom; ATL Turbines; Stagecoach; Rautomead; Ravensby Glass and Baker Hughes, a GE company. Representatives were taken on a factory tour as well as a tour of the Training Centre and also met a group of employees. All of the organisations were interested in learning about how they could recruit new talent.

Implementation Leader Louise Macauley from Baker Hughes, a GE company said: “We have expanded our site in Montrose and will be looking at recruitment in future so it was good to learn more.”

Finisher Paul Stanyard said: “It was good to hear from so many companies today and to know that there is interest. It was better than just seeing a job advert on a notice.”

Chief Executive Officer Jim Davidson of Albacom said: “We have recently expanded so are looking for a range of skilled people including CNC machinists. I was impressed by the event today as to see people coming through training to becoming fully qualified, it’s phenomenal.”

The employer visit is one of many events and activities such as My Future to support people on their next move as the factory ramps down towards June 2020.

The Chamber will be coordinating another visit in the coming weeks and we would encourage employers to contact us to show their interest. Expressions of Interest should be sent to danielcargill@dundeeandanguschamber.co.uk - if there are any questions, please call us on 01382 228545
