Discovery Point is Open for Festive Fun in the Christmas holidays

Published

20th December 2017

Getting the family together over the festive season and looking for somewhere to explore together? Discovery Point is open and ready for adventure between Christmas and the New Year.

The world class visitor attraction, which centres around Captain Scott of the Antarctic's Dundee-built ship RRS Discovery, will also be bucking the Scottish trend and opening early on January 2nd 2018, a public holiday north of the border.

Discovery Point will only be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and January 1st. The extended opening hours over the school holidays offer the perfect opportunity to visit Discovery, and enjoy the current free exhibition of prints from Ernest Shackleton's ill fated ‘Endurance' exhibition.

Frank Hurley and the Art and the Platinum Print is a collection of 20 stunning images by expedition photographer Frank Hurley. Frank later returned to Antarctica as part of the BANZARE (British Australia New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition) during 1929 to 1931 on board Discovery. His photographs give us a fascinating insight into everyday life and the Antarctic landscapes encountered by the Weddell Sea Party.

These contemporary limited-edition platinum prints are made from Frank's original glass-plate negatives housed at the Society, the very first using this rare process in honour of this master photographer. The prints have been chosen for their outstanding artistic merit and the importance of the subject matter depicted and are on display at Café Point until January 11th.
