Factory Residency Programme - Call for Designers

Dundee Design Festival has opened the call for entries for its first residency programme, pairing designers with factories across Scotland. Please download and read details of how to apply before applying online. Deadline is 5pm, Monday 3rd March 2017.

Dundee Design Festival is a celebration of worldclass design hosted by the UK’s first and only UNESCO City of Design.

In its second year, Dundee Design Festival is partnering with Make Works to deliver an exciting new residency programme.

Three designers will be selected and each paired with a Scotland-based manufacturer. Over six months, the residency will allow designers time and space with specialist fabricators to test new ideas, improvise with materials and experiment with different production techniques.

Scotland’s designers are busy blending forms of production, mixing the very old with the very new. Dundee Design Festival’s Factory Residency Programme will find alternative ways for designers to access and work with existing Scotland-based manufacturers so that together they can begin to reimagine the possibilities of their methods, materials and machines.

The programme seeks to encourage process rather than focussing too heavily on an end-product ready for market. Instead the three collaborations will support play, experimentation and innovation.

Designers will be asked to share their work-inprogress plus their ambitions for the rest of the programme during the Dundee Design Festival in May 2017. An exhibition will combine and communicate the outcomes of each collaboration in Autumn 2017, details tbc.

We’re looking for designers at any stage in their career with a willingness to test their limits. We welcome applications from designers working in (though not limited to) the following areas: ceramics, glass, jewellery, fashion, textiles, interiors, surface and product design

Dundee City Council

Dundee draws skilled workers from a 60-minute catchment population of 640,000 and has a local population of over 140,000. The availability of a large pool of highly skilled labour is a key feature in the Dundee economy. Flexibility in the labour force is currently more prevalent in Dundee than in Scotland as a whole. All forms of labour market flexibility - part-time, temporary employment, self-employment and shift work - are widely operational within the city. Labour force stability in the city is excellent, enabling companies to plan with confidence. Labour turnover levels are less than 5% and absenteeism averages 2%.
