A beautifully restored vintage bus called Henry has joined the ever-expanding range of visitor experiences on offer throughout the city of Dundee.

From 1st April, Henry The Luxury Vintage Bus will take visitors on twice daily tours around the highlights of Dundee and Broughty Ferry.

“Henry offers a unique and charming way to explore Dundee and the surrounding area,” said Angela Gatford, the Dundee businesswoman who owns Henry The Luxury Vintage Bus.

“Henry looks fabulous – and his luxuriously upholstered interior transports you back to a bygone era of elegance. In addition, Henry’s friendly, informative drivers have been hand-picked to ensure they provide the first-class service befitting travelling in such style.”

Henry The Luxury Vintage Bus takes up to eight passengers, with tours departing from the car park at the bus stop beside Discovery Point at 10am and 1pm every day.

“A two-hour tour with Henry offers lots of opportunities to find out more about the city, decide which places you’d like to return to and also chat to your fellow passengers,” continued Angela.

“Dundee’s currently one of the world’s top visitor destinations so the other passengers may be from all corners of the globe – or they may be from Dundee and happy to share a few of their own stories about the city, its people and its history.”

Angela reveals that Henry’s route passes Botanic Gardens, Balgay Park and its world-famous observatory, the outstanding view from the top of the Law and Dundee’s historic city centre as well as the heart-wrenching memorial to those lost in the Tay Rail Bridge Disaster.

The tour’s first stop is the Railway memorial, then out to Botanic Gardens and Balgay Park and onto The Law for a photo opportunity. Dundee’s historic association with Jute, Jam and Journalism is referenced by pointing out Verdant Works, DC Thomson’s Meadowside Headquarters and the Howff Cemetery where members of the Keiller family are buried.

Halfway through the tour, passengers will stop off at Dundee Musuem of Transport (Henry’s home when he’s not working) where passengers can visit the exhibition and enjoy some refreshments.

The tour also highlights the delights of Broughty Ferry, including its castle, harbour, RNLI Lifeboat Station, fabulous independent shops and traditional pubs and restaurants.

“On the way back, Henry makes a detour into Dundee’s docks to see the North Carr Lightship and HMS Unicorn, before travelling across the Tay Road bridge so passengers can experience Dundee’s unforgettable vista on the drive back and see a different view of V&A Dundee.

V&A Dundee is an amazing place, but I hope Henry’s Luxury Vintage Bus Tours will show that its only one of the many amazing places in and around the city of Dundee. The tour finishes outside Discovery Point, another must-see destination.”

Angela has been a fan of Dundee since she moved to the city in 1981. “I came here to teach children about road safety and promptly fell in love with Dundee.”

Angela’s other former businesses have included the Bruce Hotel and Laing’s bar. Then her first solo venture was The Teddy Bear Club Nursery which she ran for 19 years. After selling the nursery two years ago, Angela was looking for way of combining business with her passion for Dundee. “I want everyone to discover what a great place Dundee is – and Henry’s is my way of doing this.

“I first met Henry 10 years ago when I booked him to take my dad on a special trip for his 80th birthday. I completely fell for Henry and when I heard that he was for sale last year I couldn’t resist him as wanted something unique and quirky to set up my latest venture – Henry The Luxury Vintage Bus.

“There are excellent walking, running and even boat tours of Dundee but Henry is the only local bus tour of Dundee which is specifically aimed at small parties and, thanks to his lavish interior, he has all the comforts of home. When it comes to discovering Dundee, Henry the Luxury Vintage Bus is the only way to travel!”

Henry The Luxury Vintage Bus picks up and drop off passengers at the bus stop beside Discovery Point, with tours departing at 10am and 1pm Monday to Sunday, from April 1 until October 25.

Each tour lasts for approximately two hours (subject to traffic conditions) and costs £38 per person. Tickets have to be pre-booked via the website. Not suitable for children under 12 years of age, access may be difficult for wheelchair users and people with disabilities.
