Innovative Programmes Support Young People with Mental Health

Feeling Strong, Dundee’s youth-led Mental Health and Wellbeing charity, has launched new programmes to support young people aged 12-17 in Dundee who have faced mental health or wellbeing challenges. Each of the three programmes focus on Creative Arts, Enterprise and Sports respectively, and aim to build the skills needed to flourish in those areas.

The ten-week programmes, intended to tackle inequalities in accessing extracurricular activity, will take place across Dundee with input from local partners such as Business Gateway, the V&A, the Dundee Stars and many more. The project will give young people the chance to explore and create business ideas, art projects and experience different sports, culminating in an Awards Ceremony celebrating the achievements of those involved. The programme will begin in March and applications for young participants is currently open, closing on Wednesday the 27th of February.

The member of staff responsible for the project, Robbie Matthews, had this to say: “The planned activities will help the young people build confidence, skills and ultimately have fun, including a ceramics workshop, a business simulation and participation in sports like Ultimate Frisbee. One of the main benefits of the programme are that they will receive mentorship from exceptional near peer volunteers who will enrich the young people's experience throughout the programme.“

Brook Marshall, Project Director of Feeling Strong commented: “It is our hope that these opportunities will help some of Dundee’s most vulnerable young people recognise that the barriers they face are not insurmountable, and with the right support they can accomplish incredible things. Any young people who are interested, or interested parents and carers, can apply or view more information on our website and social media channels.”
