One of Scotland’s leading Muslim commentators will deliver the latest Open Lecture at Dundee’s Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education this week (February 15).

Professor Mona Siddiqui, OBE, will speak on the topic “Rethinking Hospitality: from law to ethics.”

Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at the School of Divinity, University of Edinburgh and Assistant Principal for Religion and Society and Dean International for the Middle East, Professor Siddiqui believes it is important to recognise that “hospitality is fundamental to the spiritual life.”

She has written: “It (hospitality) is not only expressed in acts we perform and gifts we give - it is, more importantly, a state of mind.

“A generosity of spirit lies at the core of human hospitality, making hospitality the virtue which defines humanity itself.”

Her lecture will examine the Islamic ethics that exist within the framework of ‘commanding right and forbidding wrong’ – and in the context of modernity, which throws up so many challenges, she will ask: what does Muslim ethics look like?

Professor Siddiqui is a regular commentator in various international media and chairs the BBC’s Scottish Religious Advisory Committee, holds various visiting professorships and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Society of Arts.

She has received five honorary doctorates and is listed in Debretts’ top 500 most influential people in the UK.

“We look forward to welcoming Professor Siddiqui to the College for what is sure to be an intriguing, enlightening and interesting lecture given her undoubted expertise in this field,” said Dr Abi Abubaker, The College’s Director of Operations.

“Her views and understanding will prove extremely valuable to our audience.”

Speakers from all over the world have accepted an invitation to deliver lectures on topics related to religion, Islam, Muslims and interfaith relations.

The free lectures, which run through to June, form part of the College’s mission to establish a bridge between Muslim communities and societies and non-Muslim communities and countries.

The lecture, “Rethinking Hospitality: from law to ethics” takes place at the College on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 6 pm. It is free to attend and open to the public. However registration is required due to capacity.
