A group of avid birdwatchers from an Angus care home took part in the world’s largest wildlife survey last weekend.
‘Eagle-eyed’ residents at Balhousie Glens care home in Edzell spent an hour counting as many birds as they could in their home’s gardens for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.
To prepare, residents and staff made balls filled with bird feed and placed them all around the home’s garden. Then, they sat with binoculars in hand, and noted what they saw.
A number of birds were spotted, from smaller birds which were too quick to identify to larger pigeons, seagulls and crows. Then, with help from Activities Coordinator, Jen Nevin, residents submitted the details of the Birdwatch online.
The Big Garden Birdwatch offers wildlife experts a snapshot of what birds we are seeing in our gardens and a better understanding of their behaviour and he challenges they face.
With many bird watchers and garden lovers amongst the residents, they thoroughly enjoyed getting involved. Jackie Donley, Home Manager at Balhousie Glens, said:
“Our residents just love the outdoors and nature, so this was an ideal activity for them – and they were able to stay indoors where it’s warm while they took part. It was particularly fun for our birdwatchers who love to sit and watch the wildlife come and go from our garden.”
