MDG Group's Sustainability Journey

Welcome to Clarity about Circularity, a new blog series by MDG Group! Over the coming weeks and months, we will take you on our sustainability journey and give you an insight into life at MDG. Throughout the series, you will hear from all of team, as well as some of our customers on their own success stories in sustainability and circularity.

This time last year we decided as a business that we wanted to do ‘our bit’ for the environment and give MDG Group a green makeover. However, what started off as a feel good project has become both a journey of discovery and a driving passion within the business and we are keen to share some of our learning, creativity, and expertise with the wider business community via weekly updates on this blog.

The MDG office is situated on the Riverfront in Perth, and in the ‘good old days’ we all worked here five days a week between 8am and 5pm. Prior to lockdown, we started to make small but effective changes within our office, such as reducing paper and plastic use, pinning up visual cues to encourage everyone to switch off lights and other electrical equipment when not in use, and we began our circular journey by using recycled versions of office consumables like ink cartridges and toilet paper. All businesses can make these simple adjustments as we did, and will notice the same immediate reduction in waste and energy consumption, which provided us with the motivation to do more.

When wondering where to start, as a utility cost consultant, the obvious place for us was with energy and water. Having approached different suppliers, we were able to agree green energy contracts for our office, a product that we are delighted to now offer to our customers as well. Using renewable energy has the obvious benefit of not producing any greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, while reducing air pollution at the same time. MDG Group will guide you through the entire green energy process, providing you with certification confirming your business is powered by renewable energy. With this in mind, and the Scottish Government target of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, with a 40% reduction by 2030, now is the time for us all to do our part!
