Let your dog take the lead and help beat cancer! Are you looking for a feel-good challenge that you can do with your furry best friend? Can your dog dedicate their walk on the 22nd May to Cancer Research UK?

Woof Walkies is a virtual event organised by the lovely volunteers of the Relay For Life Dundee Committee. As this is a virtual event, you get to choose your own time and location, and whether it's your pup's favourite park, a scenic local landmark or some funny laps around your garden on your lunch break, anything goes. Bark if you want to beat cancer!

Carrie Lennon, Relationship Manager for Cancer Research UK, said: ‘Now more than ever we know the value in dedicating time to get out walking in the fresh air, and I know that for me personally and my wellbeing my dog, Heidi was an amazing support throughout lockdown. Not only is Woof Walkies about raising money for a vital charity, it’s also an opportunity to get out in the fresh air and celebrate our special dogs. So I am excited to make Heidi’s walk on the 22nd May extra fun and extra special, and support the life-saving work of Cancer Research UK at the same time.’

Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives and beating cancer. Our strategy to beat cancer includes vital work into preventing cancers, diagnosing cancer earlier, developing new treatments, making treatments kinder and more effective and children’s and young people’s cancers. Through the ground breaking work of our researchers, scientists, doctors and nurses in Scotland, we’re determined to make a difference to people with cancer in Scotland and beyond.

Thanks to advances in cancer research, which have improved diagnosis and treatment, the odds of surviving cancer are better than ever – but there’s still a long way to go. COVID-19 has left Cancer Research UK facing one of the biggest challenges in its 108-year history. Research funding has already been cut by £44 million because of the pandemic, and without vital donations, millions more could be cut over the coming years. Despite this Cancer Research UK are more determined than ever, and we know that every pound helps in the fight against cancer.

Every £10 you raise could buy a new bulb for our microscopes, so we can see cancer’s every move and beat it sooner. This vital bit of kit lets our scientists look for crucial clues about cancer in precious samples.

Or if 50 dogs raised £70 each, we could buy a diamond knife – the sharpest tool on earth. This £3,500 wonder is only the size of a pencil sharpener, but it can split a cell in half. Slicing through cells allows scientists to understand the inner workings of tumours and find new ways to target the weak spots in cancer cells.

Cancer Research UK

Every year in Scotland, more than 30,200 people are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer Research UK pioneers life-saving research to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. We don’t receive government funding for our research, so every step we make towards beating cancer relies on every pound donated.
