A new campaign promoting the benefits of good physical and mental health and wellbeing is being launched today by Overgate, Dundee.

OVERGATE HEALTH WEEK has been created by the city’s flagship shopping centre – recently named Scotland’s Shopping Centre of the Year – and is being staged in partnership with a number of high-profile stakeholders.

Taking place throughout the centre as well as in William Gardiner Square and also outdoors on Overgate’s external space at The Steeple next to Costa, OVERGATE HEALTH WEEK will see teams from across the NHS including Tayside GOGA (Get Out Get Active), Tayside Tobacco Control Team, Tayside Council on Alcohol, and Tayside Sexual Health and BBV (Blood Borne Viruses) involved with the new initiative. They will be joined by Police Scotland Youth Volunteers, Terence Higgins Trust, Hillcrest, The Corner, Candu and Dundee Volunteer and Voluntary Action.

In what is a timely launch as lockdown restrictions begin to ease, a programme of engaging and educational events aimed at raising public awareness on how to achieve or improve physical and mental health will be offered daily across this week between 10am and 2pm. On site teams will be present to provide free information, activities and expert advice.

OVERGATE HEALTH WEEK will include events dedicated to areas such as maternal and infant nutrition, multi-generational fitness, and the challenges that many young people face such as bullying, drugs, alcohol and relationships. Giveaways, free health kits and information packs will be on offer across the week.

Other event partners include Dundee Cycle Hub with special guest Dr Bike Service who will be offering free bike safety checks and mini services on Friday 25th June. Slots can be booked in via https://www.anguscyclehub.org/drbike.

William Gardiner Square is the place to be on Saturday 26th June between 10am – 12.30pm as Bonnie Dundee stage an all-ages garden quiz and garden bingo takeover. Donations to enter will go towards buying new flower bulbs and the environment, climate change and gardening will be a focus of the event.

Budding young football stars will also have the chance to test their sporting abilities on Saturday as Dundee United Community Trust bring a mini football pitch to Overgate.

“We are excited to be launching Overgate Health Week in partnership with many of Dundee’s leading health and wellbeing practitioners.

“As lockdown restrictions begin to ease, and summer brings opportunities to enjoy more time outdoors, this is an ideal moment to press reset and focus on improving our health.

“Across this week, in and around Overgate, there will be lots of inspirational ideas, special guests and support groups to help us all become healthier and happier and we would encourage everyone to come along and get involved.”
