Dundee’s Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards Open For Applications

Visual artists and craft makers in Dundee are invited to apply for bursaries of up to £750 for their creative development. The Dundee Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards (VACMA) is a partnership between Leisure & Culture Dundee and Creative Scotland. The VACMA bursaries will support artists at all stages of their career to develop their creative practice.

Importantly, the awards are intended to encourage artists to stay in Dundee and to ensure that the arts play a vital and lasting role in the City. Recent awards have enabled artists to realise their projects, including experimenting with new materials, researching a new body of work, developing new skills, attending courses, residencies and exhibiting work.

A recent VACMA recipient is digital artist, Katriona Gillon, who used the funds to create a demo for her game, Date of the Dead - a tongue-in-cheek horror themed dating sim. The release of the DOTD demo has attracted the interest and support from the videogame industry and social media, allowing Katriona to work on the full version of the game.

Talking about the grant award, Katriona said:

“Not only did the grant give me the financial ability to work on the project, it was incredibly validating to know that Leisure & Culture Dundee had deemed my project, and myself, worth investing in. This gave me the confidence and motivation to continue developing, Date of the Dead, even through a global pandemic.”

Moira Methven, Chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee said:

“We have facilitated the Visual Artist and Craft Maker awards for a number of years and appreciate the difference that this funding and recognition can make to artists. The quality of work that is generated as a result of these awards never fails to impress and we look forward to receiving applications for this latest round of funding.”
