Bus Driver Training Academy

Unemployed people looking to drive away with a career behind the wheel of bus are being offered a free boost to their chances with a weeks-worth of training.

Dundee City Council’s adult employability service is running a bus driving Training Academy in conjunction with local transport provider Xplore Dundee.

Mark Flynn, convener of the council’s city development committee said: “Our training academies in other sectors, particularly hospitality have proved not only popular with participants, but also successful in getting them interviews and job opportunities.

“They have helped employers engage with people looking for a career and allowed those who wanted to know more about what it would be like to get themselves clued-up.”

From Monday November 22 for a week there will be training to help equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in this sector.

Christine McGlasson, Managing Director of Xplore Dundee said: “This is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in driving a bus to take their first steps towards a very rewarding career with Xplore Dundee.

“There’s much more to the role than just getting behind the wheel and this training academy will give potential employees a solid foundation in the kind of skills we’re looking for.”

At the end of the course, which also includes lunch every day, there will be the guarantee of an interview with Xplore Dundee for a role with them.

Dundee City Council

Dundee draws skilled workers from a 60-minute catchment population of 640,000 and has a local population of over 140,000. The availability of a large pool of highly skilled labour is a key feature in the Dundee economy. Flexibility in the labour force is currently more prevalent in Dundee than in Scotland as a whole. All forms of labour market flexibility - part-time, temporary employment, self-employment and shift work - are widely operational within the city. Labour force stability in the city is excellent, enabling companies to plan with confidence. Labour turnover levels are less than 5% and absenteeism averages 2%.
