New rules for moving goods between the EU and GB

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a printable leaflet for hauliers that move goods between the European Union and Great Britain, explaining the new rules they will need to follow from 1 January 2022.

The leaflet, available — here, warns that all hauliers moving goods between the EU and Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) must register for the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS). Full customs controls will then apply to all goods moving between the EU and Great Britain from 1 January 2022 and the GVMS system has been set up to enable fast and efficient movement of goods at many UK ports.

If hauliers fail to register and attempt to move goods through a GVMS port after the January deadline, they will be prevented from boarding ferries or shuttles and will be unable to cross the EU/GB border or clear their goods through customs.

Who needs to register?

UK and non-UK based hauliers need to register with GVMS including:

- independent drivers transporting goods and doing their own customs paperwork
- companies that sub-contract to pick up goods on behalf of another businesses
- logistics businesses, hired to transport goods and complete customs processes on behalf of another business
- large retail businesses that transport and declare their own goods.

More information is available — here — and the leaflet is available in a range of languages including French, Spanish, Polish, German and Hungarian.
