Elizabeth continues her baking and cooking skills at Blairgowrie care home

At 93 years young, Elizabeth Cannon still loves to cook - and her care home is only too happy for her to indulge her passion.

Elizabeth is a resident at Balhousie Stormont Lodge in Blairgowrie where she still bakes and cooks from a favourite recipe book she has had for years.

One of 10 children, Elizabeth got interested in cooking and baking as soon as she was able to help her mother. Born and raised in Dunkeld, Perthshire, she went on to marry and have children and settled in nearby Bankfoot. A shepherd's wife, she would make sure her family always had a hot meal.

Ashleigh Henvey, Activities Coordinator at Balhousie Stormont Lodge, who has been helping Elizabeth with her efforts, said: "It's just lovely to see Elizabeth continuing to bake and cook, and the fact that it's now all for fun makes it all the more enjoyable for her and for us."

Home Manager Jules Ritchie-Urry said: "Elizabeth is proof that care home activities are what you make them. We pride ourselves on working with residents so that their spare time is spent on person-centred and meaningful activities. Elizabeth really is busting the myths around care homes."

Balhousie Care Group's Luncarty care home is shortlisted for a Scottish Care Award for its meaningful activities. Meanwhile, Balhousie's senior management has been so impressed with Elizabeth's recipes that they have been added to the Recipes Page on the company's corporate website. There, residents and service users from across the group share their dishes with the public.
