Dundee Science Centre is sparking a significant increase in STEM engagement both locally and nationally, according to the CEO of Dundee Science Centre.

In the presence of Jamie Hepburn MSP, Scottish Government Minister for Higher Education and Further Education, Dr Isabel Bruce OBE highlighted the role the Centre is now playing in the take-up of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects at school, college and university and its growing contribution to the local economy. Last week's event was also attended by Paul Clancy, the outgoing Executive Director of Dundee City Council’s Children and Families Service.

Funded by The Inspiring Science Fund alongside other Trusts and partners, CONNECT has completely transformed the ground floor of the visitor attraction. Brought to life while the Centre was closed due to COVID-19, the refurbishment incorporates a number of new, interactive exhibits and an upgrading of all ground-floor facilities aimed at widening access and improving accessibility. The Science Centre has also launched a new Primary schools programme offering in-person school visits, a suite of resources and livestreamed workshops from a flexible, state-of-the-art classroom space.

Jamie Hepburn MSP, Scottish Government Minister for Higher Education and Further Education said, “Science centres play a key role in delivering our STEM Education and Training Strategy as well as making science, innovation and creativity accessible to a wide audience from all across Scotland. The range of learning opportunities and resources on offer from Dundee Science Centre will help a whole new generation engage with science.”

Dr Isabel Bruce OBE, CEO of Dundee Science Centre added, “Since the start of lockdown we have engaged with over 160,000 students nationally supporting STEM learning in a blended capacity with remote and face to face learning experiences. As we look towards 2022, we will reach a greater number of Secondary students and young adults supporting their transition from school to further and higher education and into STEM careers.”

CONNECT was delivered by two Dundee firms - Bentleys Shopfitting (bespoke joinery manufacturer and interior fit-out specialists) and Aim Design (lead design team).

In addition to The Inspiring Science Fund, CONNECT is funded by The Robertson Trust, The Mathew Trust, The Northwood Charitable Trust, The Thriplow Charitable, The Alexander Moncur Trust, The Leng Charitable Trust, The Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee and The Hugh Fraser Foundation.
