Dundee and Angus College is celebrating four prestigious awards in just two days.
Sophy Mitchell was hailed the ‘College Colleague of the Year’ at the College Development Network (CDN) Awards which recognise the skills of staff and students throughout Scotland’s colleges.
Sophy, who graduated with a HNC in Hospitality Management back in 2014 is now a Stores Supervisor at the Kingsway Campus. She was singled out for creating amazing and entertaining online cooking sessions for students and staff during lockdown.
Receiving the award from Derek Timpany, Senior Education Officer of award sponsor General Teaching Council Scotland (GTCS), Sophy said, “This has been an experience I truly won’t forget. I’m shocked, happy and so chuffed!”
The Students Association also received a Highly Commended award within the Marketing and Communications category for the way they engaged and communicated with students both online and through their ‘cuppy and chat’ sessions.
Meanwhile, the College’s acclaimed ‘Reducing Period Plastics’ project secured a Highly Commended award within the Sustainability Action category. This campaign is designed to not only give women across the spectrum easy access to free period products, but also to focus support and information around the wider health and welfare issues relating to period and sexual health.
Last but by no means least, the College’s Academic Development Team was praised within the Skills Development category for its work in supporting awareness and embedding of Meta-Skills in partnership with schools and teams across the College.
The CDN awards were presented during a glittering ceremony in Glasgow on Thursday 9 December 2021, in the presence of guest speaker Jamie Hepburn, MSP, Minister for Higher Education and Further Education, Youth Employment and Training.
The evening before, the College also received the Sustainability Award at the Scottish Public Service Awards for its contributions and commitment to reducing Scotland’s carbon emissions, meeting exacting climate change targets and achieving a more sustainable economy. Held at the Scottish Parliament, the awards were co-hosted by the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, Alison Johnstone MSP, and Deputy First Minister John Swinney.
