Upstream Battle® comes to Tayside

Over last three years Keep Scotland Beautiful’s award winning campaign to tackle marine litter from source to sea, Upstream Battle®, has been raising awareness, gathering evidence and inspiring action in Glasgow and the Clyde Valley and in August 2021, Upstream Battle on the Tay was launched.
Exclusive new research conducted on people in the Tayside area showed that over 90% of people would like more action to be taken to prevent litter from getting out to sea; and over 80% of people would be more interested in learning about the actions they could take to prevent their rubbish from making its way to the sea. (Reference: Diffley Partnership, ScotPulse commission by Keep Scotland Beautiful 2021).
With 80% of litter in the sea coming from the land, the Upstream Battle® campaign aims to highlight how litter gets from rivers to the marine environment, and how everyone can help prevent it from getting there in the future.
One way we do this is through support from Anchor Groups. Nine Anchor Groups were recruited across Dundee, Angus and Perth & Kinross council areas in Autumn 2021.  They carry out regular litter surveys and litter picks along the River Tay, or one of its tributaries, in their local area. Details of the individual Anchor Groups can be found on the Upstream Battle® Anchor Group webpage.
Individuals and organisations can support the campaign too.  One way is through helping to raise awareness of the issue through sharing messages by displaying Upstream Battle® posters and posting campaign videos and social media content on your channels.  All the content is available to download from the Upstream Battle® Raising Awareness webpage.  You can also get involved in taking part in a litter pick or carrying out a litter survey on a small stretch of a waterway.
For more details of upcoming events you can join in with or if you would like to be sent a campaign poster to display at your organization, please contact alison.limbert@keepscotlandbeautiful.org
