Chamber member MSD Design Ltd has kickstarted an annual creative writing award in commemoration of Scots poet Harvey Holton.

Dundee Arts Advocacy project Art Angel is launching the award in conjunction with Harvey’s widow, Anne, and MSD Design Ltd Managing Director Martin Stevenson, a friend of the poet.

At a ceremony at the Dundee office of MSD Design Ltd at City Quay, Rosie Summerton, of Art Angel, was presented with a cheque for £150 from the company to kick-start the Harvey Holton Quaich for Creative Writing.

Anne Holton was in addition presented with a portrait of Harvey which Mr Stevenson, who is also an artist, has recently completed.

This follows the launch of a commemorative CD ‘Harvey Holton - For Ilka Day’ at an event at Duncan of Jordanstone College last month.

Harvey worked at Art Angel as tutor to creative writers for several year prior to his death, aged 60, in 2010. The CD will now be available through donations to Art Angel.

Anne Holton said: “This quaich is a fitting tribute to Harvey and a constant reminder of what he was passionate about - creative Scots writing, people and Scotland. It is also appropriate that it should be established at Art Angel where he gave and received so much in his later years. I am also grateful to Martin for the gift of his wonderful portrait which I intend to bequeath to the Scottish Poetry Library.”

Mr Stevenson said: “Harvey was a unique and talented individual and I am pleased that his name will continue to be a byword for creative writing for future generations of Scottish writers.”
