Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education in Dundee has played host to more than 100 delegates, representing 26 different countries at an international conference.
The Dundee College is partnering with the British Association of Teachers of Arabic (BATA) to host the 2024 BATA 4th Annual International Conference on Thursday 27th to Friday 28th June, 2024. Delegates have come from across the world including the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
The Conference is designed to offer a platform for teachers, students and research scholars of Arabic language, culture, literature, linguistics and translation from the United Kingdom and beyond to exchange ideas, share good practice and disseminate their scholarship and research to a wider audience. It also aims at facilitating greater collaboration and links between teachers, students and scholars in the field.
Academics Dr Sara Al Tubuly and Fatima Aldergazaly from Al-Maktoum College have been on the organising committee alongside colleagues from the universities of Durham, Warwick, Swansea, Manchester and Westminster.
Dr Sara Al Tubuly said, “It’s fantastic for us at Al-Maktoum to have the opportunity to host such a prestigious event here in Dundee. During the two-day event, we have a varied, diverse programme with an interesting range of speakers and workshops. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet others, share ideas and make new connections.”
The conference chair is Prof. El Mustapha Lahlali from the University of Leeds. As BATA Founder and President, Prof. Lahlali opened the conference this morning.
He said, “The Association supports and promotes teaching, learning, scholarship and research in the fields of Arabic language and culture. It brings together teachers of Arabic at all levels, both at Higher Education and Schools and we’re delighted to have so many here in person at our 2024 conference.
“Through BATA, our aim is to share, promote and disseminate best practices and resources across the wide network of teachers in the UK and beyond. We don’t often get the chance to come together so it’s a pleasure to have international experts in the field here in Dundee for keynote speeches, seminars and workshops.
“We are all looking forward to their thought-provoking discussions, diverse perspectives and intellectually stimulating debate covering over 25 very exciting sessions.”
There are several courses on offer at Al-Maktoum of interest to students of Arabic and also Middle East studies. These include an SCQF Level 10 Diploma in Arabic Language, an Executive Diploma in Islamic Finance & Entrepreneurship, MPhil in Middle East in a Global Context and MSc in Islamic Finance.
