OVERGATE, DUNDEE ANNOUNCES THE CREATION OF A NEW GARDEN OF GRATITUDE, TIMED WITH ARMED FORCES DAY 2024

The new space for reflection and thanks, in partnership with Bonnie Dundee and Uppertunity, will be completed for Remembrance Sunday this November

Overgate, Dundee has announced the creation of a Garden of Gratitude, a new welcoming public space to be enjoyed by all generations, underpinned with a permanent expression of thanks to past and present Armed Forces personnel.

Located within an area of William Gardiner Square at the rear of the centre, the announcement of the Garden of Gratitude has been timed with Armed Forces Day 2024 which takes place this Saturday 29th June.

Created in partnership with Bonnie Dundee and Uppertunity, the Overgate Garden of Gratitude will see a section of the square reimagined into a beautiful tranquil area where the public can reflect, and should they wish, give thanks on the sacrifices made by personnel. The new garden will be completed in time for Remembrance Sunday on 10th November, 2024, and in keeping with the enduring symbolism of the poppy, a red theme will translate across the design of the Garden of Gratitude.

A new permanent Gratitude sculpture commissioned by Overgate will be complemented with new red seating and new planters featuring public art designs by local talents. Bonnie Dundee, the small but passionate team of volunteers responsible for planting and maintaining a colourful floral welcome across the city, including in Overgate’s William Gardiner Square, will refresh the area with new plants.

In addition, Uppertunity, the wonderful Dundee charity supporting adults with learning difficulties, will be creating and installing new bird boxes across the trees within the Garden of Gratitude to encourage bird song.

Commenting, Malcolm Angus, Centre Manager, Overgate said;

“The Garden of Gratitude will be a new welcoming space within William Gardiner Square where the public can take the time to enjoy a sense of peace, and express quiet personal thanks to the country’s veterans should they wish, only steps away from the busy environment of Overgate.

“We are grateful to Bonnie Dundee and Uppertunity for partnering this initiative, and we hope the public will enjoy the tranquillity of the garden when it is completed and opens later this year on Remembrance Sunday.”
