Developments within Angus College show a move towards the growing industry of renewable energy, with new courses including general awareness of the area to wind turbine technician training.
Roddy Scott, who recently undertook the new role of Renewable and Energy Development Manager, explained why the College is a key player in this area: "We have many years experience of training craft and technician apprentices for local engineering and in particular oil and gas service companies in areas of manufacture, maintenance and welding. Training for the Offshore Wind Turbine market is a natural extension of this provision as the skills required are already embedded in our courses and apprentice programmes."
With 2000 wind turbines proposed in Scottish waters, the demand for highly skilled individuals in manufacturing, maintenance and welding is set to increase over the coming years. Mr Scott has been working closely with companies involved in the development of the renewable industry to ensure that the College can offer the right training to students.
The new position of Renewable Manager has also helped open doors to international activities, as well as developing links with local and national companies. Angus College currently trains Design Draughting Apprentices working for Aberdeen oil and gas companies operating in Russia, Australia and Brazil, using online learning and flexible, remote training. These technologies will allow the College to deliver vital qualifications to both individuals and companies around the world.
Kevin Murphy, Director of Learning and Teaching stated: "I am delighted Angus College has invested in the Renewable and Energy Managers post to drive forward the College's plans to support the major opportunities that are being proposed in the East Coast of Scotland relating to Renewable Energies."
