Affertons Funeral Care has expanded its Dundee operations by taking on new staff including a former traffic warden as a trainee undertaker.
Conar Fleming is the latest recruit at Affertons which opened a new branch in Fintry earlier this year. He has also been joined by Leanne Taylor who has taken on an administration role after moving from Co-op Funeralcare.
Conar is undergoing training in all aspects of the job delivered by Funeral Directors Paul Craigie and Ronnie Robb. He is learning everything from dealing with the deceased behind the scenes to arranging and carrying out funerals to the family members’ wishes.
Prior to joining Affertons, Conar was a traffic warden and worked for two and a half years ensuring the smooth flow of traffic throughout the city, patrolling the streets and car parks and advising the public on local parking rules and facilities. He jumped at the chance of trying something different when the opportunity to join Affertons arose.
Conar said: “The two jobs are night and day. I’m incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to join this industry and learn new skills.
“Both jobs are dealing with people but they couldn’t be more different. What I like about Affertons is that we are doing everything we possibly can to help people at one of the most difficult times of their life.
“We’ve got a lot to learn but the guys at Affertons are slowly and patiently taking us through everything one step at a time and we are gradually learning that there is a lot more to the job than one might envisage.”
Leanne is the only new start to have worked in the funeral care industry before, having spent almost eight years working for Co-op Funeralcare.
She said: “I know the industry well, but I think working at Affertons is much more personal. We can tailor what we do to whatever the families want and we get to see the whole process through. Having those personal connections in what feels like a less corporate company makes a real difference to us and those who turn to us in their time of need.”
Affertons began providing funeral services in Dundee in 2013 and have nurtured a strong reputation as a trusted and caring business with a commitment to going the extra mile for families, whilst they deal with their own emotions at the most awful of times.
They have two funeral parlours in Dundee, one on Strathmartine Road and a new premises at 69c Fintry Road, Dundee.

Affertons has also partnered with the Golden Charter, one of the UK’s largest funeral plan providers, to offer clients a safe and reliable way to plan for the future and give the peace of mind that, when the time comes, everything is taken care of.
Earlier this year, Affertons unveiled their new jute coffins in a nod to the city’s famous heritage. The new coffins are designed to have minimal environmental impact and can be used in woodland burials as well as traditional grave ceremonies and in crematoria.
