Moira’s Transformation Journey from Traditional Retail to Modern Boutique Success

Moira, the proud owner of Allure in Angus, has breathed new life into her retail business, transforming it from the long-standing Moira’s into a vibrant, contemporary boutique that’s turning heads and drawing in customers old and new. The journey began with a simple conversation at a Business Gateway event — and has since blossomed into a full-scale success story.

Formerly a more traditional retail space, Moira’s had served the local community for years. But Moira knew it was time for a change. With the help of Business Gateway, she rebranded the shop as Allure and gave it a fresh, modern identity that better reflects the style and quality of the clothing on offer.

From First Conversation to Full Transformation

The turning point came when Moira met Kate Clark, an Outreach Business Adviser at Business Gateway. Initially unaware that she might qualify for financial support, Moira was encouraged by Kate to apply for the Angus Council’s SME Start and Grow Business Grant. Kate’s support didn’t stop there — she guided Moira through the application process and, crucially, arranged for retail experts to provide tailored advice on improving the shop’s layout, branding, and customer experience.

Thanks to Kate’s coordination, Moira had the opportunity to work one-to-one with Business and Retail Consultant Kimberley Guthrie and also arranged a half-day session with retail specialist Lynda Murray. These sessions helped Moira reimagine her store’s layout and brand identity, giving her the confidence and clarity to move forward with the transformation.

A Grant That Changed Everything

The £7,000 grant covered approximately 65% of the total cost of the rebrand and shop refit — a level of investment that would have been out of reach without this support. With the funding, Moira was able to:

  • Repaint the shop exterior in a modern colour scheme and install new signage reflecting the new brand identity.
  • Refresh the interior with new paint and wallpaper in the changing rooms.
  • Replace outdated yellowed lighting with high-CRI LED fittings, creating a brighter, more inviting atmosphere.
  • Upgrade faulty window lighting to enhance visibility and appeal, especially during darker months.
  • Purchase new shop fittings, including mannequins, a new counter, and modern display units for both the shop floor and windows.

A New Era for Allure

Since the relaunch, Allure has seen a marked increase in both footfall and sales. Loyal customers have praised the fresh new look and improved layout, while new visitors are discovering the boutique for the first time — many assuming it’s a brand-new store. The rebrand has helped shed the “old-fashioned” image previously associated with Moira’s, allowing the quality and style of the clothing to shine through.

Even the staff have noticed the difference. “It feels like a brand-new shop,” Moira shared. “It’s a nicer place to work, and the team is more motivated than ever.”

Looking Ahead

Moira’s journey with Business Gateway highlights the power of local support networks and the impact of timely, expert advice. From initial inspiration to successful execution, Allure’s transformation is a testament to what’s possible when ambition meets opportunity.

For other small business owners considering a refresh or rebrand, Moira has one piece of advice: “Don’t assume you’re not eligible for support. Reach out, ask questions, and take that first step — it could change everything.”
