EU sets up REACH enforcement project on safe use of chemicals in workplaces

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has announced that the next EU-wide enforcement project will address the safety of workers, with a new pilot aiming to control the export of hazardous substances from the EU.

It will strengthen enforcement by enhancing collaboration between authorities responsible for REACH, and those responsible for occupational safety and health legislation. Inspections will take place in 2027 with the report planned for the following year.

The new initiative will also focus on the requirements of the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Regulation. This includes checking that banned chemicals are not exported and verifying that exports of hazardous chemicals are notified according to the rules and are accompanied by appropriate information.

Inspectors will also check that exports have received consent from third parties, when required by the Regulation. These particular inspections are planned for 2026 with the report to be published in 2027.

The ECHA said that the new safety project will examine control of online sales of chemicals and checks of restrictions on hazardous substances, such as diisocyanates, phthalates in consumer products or substances used in tattoo inks.
