Saturday 21st March 2026 marks 125 years since RRS Discovery was launched in Dundee. To celebrate this milestone, Dundee Heritage Trust (DHT) commissioned Broughty Ferry–based freelance designer Alastair Walker to create a special anniversary logo.
Following a successful proposal highlighting his branding experience, Alastair began work in late January. Drawing inspiration from the ship’s first Antarctic expedition, he worked closely with Julie Cumming, the Marketing Manager at Dundee Heritage Trust and explored their online archive to develop a concept inspired by history.
“Having the opportunity to really dig into the Discovery’s original expedition materials broadened my thinking and shaped the direction we took,” said Alastair.
The final logo was hand-drawn to reflect the character of the era. It features the distinctive silhouette of RRS Discovery, framed by circular rope detailing. A carefully selected shade, inspired by original expedition materials, was named ‘Expedition Blue’.
Within four weeks, Alastair delivered the completed artwork along with brand guidance to ensure the logo could be used consistently across print, digital and merchandise.
The commemorative mark will be used to promote the anniversary ceremony on 21st March and will appear on a range of merchandise available at Discovery Point.
“Being able to celebrate the story of Discovery through a design that connects back to its first Antarctic expedition feels very special,” said Alastair. “It’s a privilege to contribute to such an important moment in Dundee’s history.”
Julie Cumming, Marketing Manager at Dundee Heritage Trust, added:
“We were delighted to work with Alastair on this project. He combined his passion for Dundee with creativity and a deep respect for the history of RRS Discovery to design a logo befitting this remarkable ship.”
A full case study of the project is available on Alastair’s website.
