A major community artwork celebrating Dundee’s history and identity has secured a permanent home in the city centre.

The Dundee Tapestry will be displayed at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum, providing a long-term setting for the work following previous successful exhibitions. Created by more than 140 volunteer stitchers from Dundee and the surrounding area, the tapestry features 38 hand-stitched panels that reflect different aspects of the city’s past and present.

The artwork highlights Dundee’s industrial heritage, communities, culture and creative achievements, offering a visual record of the city’s development and the experiences of its people. Previously exhibited at V&A Dundee, where it attracted significant visitor numbers, the tapestry will now be housed in a dedicated gallery space within The McManus.

The move is expected to provide greater long-term access for residents and visitors, with the new display allowing audiences to explore each panel in detail and engage with the stories they represent. The Dundee Tapestry project was developed as a collaborative effort, bringing together contributors to tell the story of the city through themes including industry, education, culture and community life.

Its installation at The McManus reinforces the venue’s role as a key destination for sharing Dundee’s heritage and supporting cultural activity in the city.
