The Broons and Oor Wullie's braw weekend

The National Library of Scotland and DC Thomson are joining forces to celebrate the 90th anniversary of two of Scotland’s most beloved comic characters, Oor Wullie and The Broons, with a series of free public events taking place later this month.

From 24–26 July, visitors in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee will have the opportunity to explore rare and historic items from the National Library of Scotland’s collections, offering a unique insight into the history and enduring appeal of the iconic characters.

The free drop-in events will feature activities, giveaways and interactive experiences designed to appeal to visitors of all ages, providing fans old and new with the chance to celebrate nine decades of Scottish comic heritage.

As part of the celebrations, DC Thomson’s headquarters in Dundee will host a special display showcasing a selection of rare items from the company’s own archives. The exhibition will be extended beyond the event weekend and will remain on display until 30 July, giving visitors additional opportunities to discover the rich history behind Oor Wullie and The Broons.

The anniversary events highlight the lasting cultural impact of the much-loved characters, which have entertained generations of readers since first appearing in Scottish newspapers in 1936.

With free admission and a range of family-friendly activities on offer, the celebrations promise to be a fitting tribute to two of Scotland’s most enduring comic icons.
