Allan Smith - English Language Teaching and Training (ELTT) Curriculum and Quality Leader - shares this year’s award with two other school educators from across Scotland. Allan is the winner in the colleges category, alongside the wider English Speaking for Other Languages (ESOL) and Learning Engagement Team at the College.
The award - now in its fourth edition and for the first time including nominations from the college sector - celebrates educators who go above and beyond to challenge discrimination and promote a culture of equality and diversity.
Allan and the ESOL team have played a leading role in developing an inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds. A particular achievement has been Dundee and Angus College becoming Scotland’s first College of Sanctuary in 2024.
On receiving his award, Allan commented:
“Seeing the transformation in our learners and the environment we’ve created together is incredibly rewarding.
“Since becoming a College of Sanctuary in 2024, our ESOL team has prioritised reducing stress across all aspects of learning and college life. This includes adapting our placement testing through trauma-informed speaking assessments, ensuring students feel safe from the outset and are supported to succeed, stay and achieve.”
"The award may be given to me, but it is also a recognition of the wider team who contribute to support students learn English as they adapt to life in our country - sometimes in harrowing circumstances."
The award is named in honour of Saroj Lal, a pioneering teacher, race relations campaigner and community activist who worked to advance multicultural and anti-racist education in Scotland.
Vineet Lal, Saroj Lal’s son and an award panellist, praised this year’s winners for their commitment to challenging established norms and creating positive change. Youssouf Kassime from The Royal High School, Edinburgh and Cassie O’Neill at King’s Oak Primary School, Greenock were the other recipients of the award.
Dundee & Angus College’s ESOL provision supports learners from diverse backgrounds to develop their English language skills, confidence and opportunities for further study and employment. Courses are offered from beginner to advanced level, with full-time and part-time options available.
