A roulette wheel, plasma ball and soap are just some of the items illustrating the fascinating side of maths in Dundee this weekend, shedding light on a host of quandaries from why earphones always end up in a tangled mess to why bubbles are always the same shape!

The ‘Saturday Science Live’ event, to be held within the city’s Wellgate Shopping Centre on Saturday 28 March 2015, marks the final day of the University of Dundee ‘Women in Science’ Festival, which kicked off on Saturday 7 March 2015.

Taking place on Level 2 of the Wellgate (near BHS) between 1-4pm, the Dundee Science Centre drop-in events, aimed at both adults and children, take place on the last Saturday of every month.

This weekend’s event revolves around the theme of ‘Women in Mathematics’, featuring several researchers from the mathematics department at the University of Dundee who will be celebrating the achievements of women in mathematics and presenting some of their research.

Visitors will also be able to take a chance with probability, get their brain tangled around knot theory, and count with radioactivity!

Rebecca Erskine, Exhibition and Community Engagement Manager, Dundee Science Centre said, “As the Women in Science festival draws to a close, it seems fitting that we’re taking this event right into the city centre, and showcasing some of the most interesting aspects of maths.  Visitors will be able to take a chance by taking part in a roulette style activity, find out why earphones always end up in a tangled mess when you put them away, and how to get into the swing of things with pendulums!”

Meanwhile, Jon Walton, Manager, Wellgate Shopping Centre added, “Whatever your take on maths is, this weekend’s event promises to be a fun and intriguing way to spend some time with scientists working right here in Dundee, and be truly amazed at the role of maths in a host of day-to-day events in the process!”
