Christmas Magic arrives at Overgate

Published

3rd December 2015

It’s the most magical time of the year and Overgate in Dundee is guaranteeing an extra special Christmas this year with the announcement of its in-centre festive activity.

This year’s children’s entertainment, STORIES WITH SANTA, officially launches on FRIDAY 4th DECEMBER AT 12pm with Santa cutting the red Christmas ribbon along with children from The Archie Foundation.

STORIES WITH SANTA will transport excited children into a world of fantasy and storytelling as they are welcomed by Mrs Christmas, Belinda Bookworm and Crafty Christie to play word games and sing stories as part of a group before Santa reads a festive tale, including ‘Santa’s Sleigh is on its way to Dundee’.

Each child will then have the opportunity to meet Santa and have their photograph taken as well as receiving a gift of a book, appropriate to their age (*while stocks last). Once each child has met Santa, the fun continues at a dedicated craft area hosted by Crafty Christie, Belinda Bookworm and Mrs Christmas where there is the opportunity to make a Christmassy item to take home – snowmen, reindeers, icicles, wherever the children’s imagination takes them – as well as being encouraged to share their own Christmas stories and Santa experience.

This fantastic FREE event runs 12pm – 5pm on 4th – 6th December then at the same times on Saturday 12th – Tuesday 22nd December.

Bringing musical cheer to Overgate throughout December, starting on Saturday 5th December 2pm – 3pm, will be LOCAL CHOIRS including Bible Baptist Church, Deaf Hub, Ballumbie Primary School, Dundee Strathspey & Reel Society, Dundee Gaelic Choir, Ukulele Band, U3A Folk Group, St Clement’s Primary School, RSNO Choir, Kirkton Community Rock Choir, Craigiebarns Primary and Rowantree Primary.

Some of these talented groups who will be performing come from ten primary school finalists selected to record their song in the studio as part of the Wave 102 Help for Kids Christmas Carol Competition.

The Help for Kids team will be in Overgate with their collection buckets during these choir performances and the public is being encouraged to dig deep for such a deserving local charity.

Augmenting Overgate’s festive offering further will be a number of in-centre pop ups as part of the extended LATE NIGHT CHRISTMAS SHOPPING NIGHTS throughout December. This will see retailers open until 9pm on Thursdays, 6pm on Sundays and 7pm mid week for the final ten days countdown. These pop ups include The Alvin and The Chipmunks Tour on 19th December, Ladbrokes’ Trophy Tour of 4 SPFL trophies on 20th December, Dundee’s Apex Hotel offering YuSpa taster beauty treatments, Christmas canapés and festive drinks sampling as well as competitions by True Kitchen and Jam Jar, a beautiful blooms pop up shop by Bella Rosa Florist and Christmas-themed origami by social inclusion enterprise Diaosu.

Rounding up Overgate’s year-long 15 Good Deeds campaign will be the HELP FOR KIDS GIVING TREE, located outside Debenhams, where public gift donations will be collated before being distributed by the Help for Kids team. Last year over £10,000 worth of gifts were collected and distributed by the Social Work Department and Overgate has already collected over 140 items for Christmas 2015. Adjacent to the Giving Tree, Help for Kids will also offer gift wrapping for donations on the 19th and 20th December as well as staging a live group performance to support sales of the Help for Kids charity CD.

Also offering gift wrapping on the 5th and 18th December will be the NHS Organ Donation Scotland team. In return for giving their time to wrap Christmas presents they will share the importance of signing up to be an organ donor.

Speaking about the Christmas at Overgate launch, Overgate Centre Manager, Malcolm Angus said,
