A new apartment complex has sprung up in Dundee city centre just days after a conference to boost tourism to the city.

The Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the arrival of serviced accommodation business Urban Quarters following its 2016 Dundee and Angus Tourism Conference.

Ahead of opening to the public next week, Lynne Henderson of Urban Quarters invited local businesses and media to have a tour of four new luxury serviced apartments on South Tay Street.

Lynne Henderson of LM&G Ltd, a new member of the Chamber and Chamber Chief Exec Alison Henderson were interviewed by STV News and Radio Tay about the growing need for Dundee to offer a wide range of accommodation to suit all types of visitors to the city.

Guests from V&A Museum of Design Dundee, Dundee City Centre Management, Alliance Trust and University of Dundee took a tour along with neighbouring businesses in the area.

Alison Henderson, chief executive, Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, said the investment of £650,000, which saw the refurbishment of a B-listed building and vacant office block into new visitor accommodation, was great news for the city, which is preparing for an influx of tourists with the opening of the V&A.

She said: “Leisure tourism and business travel associated with the city’s universities, gaming, life sciences and technology sectors are set to bring in many more visitors to the city over the next three years as we lead up to the V&A Museum of Design Dundee opening.

“With around 270,000 visitors expected to visit the V&A in Dundee each year, there is a definite need for businesses such as Urban Quarters who will offer a high quality and memorable customer experience, and it is a very welcome addition to the region’s accommodation sector.”

Urban Quarters is four twobedroom serviced apartments, offering a hybrid between hotel and self-catering, situated in South Tay Street. Each apartment is named after a famed Dundee figure.

Lynne Henderson, co-managing director of Urban Quarters, said: “Our research revealed there was a shortage of this type of accommodation in Dundee and, with our previous experience operating, we were keen to evolve the concept of self-catering accommodation and take it to the next level.”

The renovation was contracted to a number of local businesses including architect Mark Walker, Graeme Tennent, West End building contractors and Andy Rice, Not Just Design.
