A cross industry, agency partnership group in Dundee and Angus has been working since the summer of 2014 to promote the aims of the Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce (DSYW) report, to plan on a regional basis, and to bring employers together to make a key contribution in delivering the key performance indicators.

The Board’s vision is to maximise youth employment in Dundee and Angus through a cohesive partnership between industry and education to match employers’ needs with young people’s aspirations.

The key objective of the Dundee and Angus Developing the Young Workforce (D&A DYW) Board will be to engage the Dundee and Angus business community to promote a deeper understanding of the factors affecting the relatively low rate of employment of young people in Dundee & Angus (against the national figures) and to develop initiatives and solutions to meet those challenges via employer engagement and partnership.

Craig Nicol, Chair of the Board said \"The Scottish Government’s initiative to regionalise the drive for the development of our young workforce provides us with a fabulous opportunity to harness the positive contributions which our young people can bring to our city and region for the next generation. As Joint Managing Partner of a large local employer, I see on a daily basis the value which young employees can bring to a business. As Chair, I am genuinely excited at the prospect of working with my colleagues to engage our region’s business community and work with broad range of organisations to develop initiatives and solutions to prepare our youth for the workplace.\"

Setting a team in place to drive the activity is a key next step

The next stage of the Group is to bring on board a project team who will work for the next three years to deliver a cohesive and engaging programme to develop and deepen the links between employers, the private sector and education and young people. The main focus for the team will be to promote the benefits and ways that employers can better engage with young people and schools & college in order to inspire, influence and ultimately employ & encourage young people into vocational routes into employment.

The employer engagement team will:

Work with local businesses and stakeholders to facilitate customer engagement with schools and D&A College in relation to increasing the employability opportunities for young people

Provide responsive and high quality services to business and other external clients, which ensures opportunities for young people to engage with businesses throughout their education are fully exploite

Operate on a Dundee and Angus wide basis in partnership with D&A DYW Board Members and partner Academic Teams to promote the range of services on offer to support workforce development and recruitment opportunities for young people.

The team will comprise:

D&A DYW Manager

D&A DYW Employer Liaison Advisor (3 posts)

D&A DYW Employer Liaison Administrator

Dundee & Angus College, as one of the lead Partners in the Group, are currently advertising the vacancies and in due course the team will be based at Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce. We would encourage as many applications as possible for these exciting new roles - this represents an opportunity to really make a difference and ensure true change for our business community and our young people.

There will also be many opportunities for employers and the private sector to get involved and directly impact the work of the Group - an employer event will be held in due course to update everyone about what is involved and how you can support - we will let you know as soon as possible when that will be.
