A new international air link between Dundee and Amsterdam starts this morning [Monday 23 May], funded through the UK Government’s £7 million Regional Air Connectivity fund.

The first Flybe flight from Schiphol will touch down in Dundee at 11.55am today [Monday 23 May], and marks the start of Dundee’s first ever international air route.

Flybe will run the service six times a week, linking Dundee to continental Europe for the first time.  Tickets on the route are on sale from £24.99 one way.

The UK Government’s financial support for the new service recognises the importance of Dundee airport to the region’s economy.  Amsterdam is a key European hub airport, and the flights to Schiphol will give Dundee global air links for the first time.

Scotland Office Minister Andrew Dunlop said:

\"I am really pleased that the UK Government has been able to invest in this new Dundee-Amsterdam route.  On top of  daily flights to London, these new flights to Schiphol mean that Dundee now has great links to the whole of the UK, Europe and beyond.

“The city - and Tayside - are on the up, with exciting new developments poised to bring jobs, prosperity and opportunities to the area. Good air connectivity is a key part of supporting that economic development.”

UK Government Aviation Minister Robert Goodwill said:

“Improved links with Europe are absolutely vital for securing prosperity for people across the UK. This new route between Dundee and Amsterdam will boost connectivity and drive up investment. Regional airports like Dundee are vital engines for local economies, creating jobs and opportunities for the area.”

Vincent Hodder, Flybe’s Chief Revenue Officer said:

“Our new route from Dundee to Amsterdam is now the fourth route operated by Flybe under the UK Government’s Regional Air Connectivity Fund. It represents a strong affirmation of Flybe’s commitment to improving connectivity for the UK regions and in turn supporting regional businesses, regional tourism and providing a ‘One Stop Link to the World’. We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and support with which this new route has been received and look forward to it going from strength to strength.”

Inglis Lyon, Managing Director of Highlands and Islands Airports (HIAL) said:

“This new route is a great example of stakeholders and partners, governments and the local people, working together to secure investment and deliver essential connectivity.  It brings an undisputed, exciting, pan European feel to Dundee and the surrounding area.  Forward bookings are encouraging and it is important we continue to harness this enthusiasm for the region’s long term success.”
