The Awards have been described as the “Oscars of UK higher education”, and “University of the Year” is the top prize in the awards scheme – the equivalent of “Best Film”.

Professor Nigel Seaton, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Abertay, said:  “The whole Abertay community – students, staff and alumni – will be absolutely delighted by this.

“Just being nominated for the award is a major accolade for any university, but this is extra special for us because it comes so soon after our students confirmed us as the best modern university in Scotland in the recent National Student Survey.”

Many institutions submitted entries for this year’s “University of the Year” category, which is awarded for evidence of “bold, imaginative and innovative initiatives that have advanced the institution’s reputation”.

The judges will award the prize to “an institution that demonstrated exceptional performance during the 2014-15 academic year”.

Abertay’s entry describes the wholesale transformation during 2014/15 and 2015/16 of its approach to teaching and learning, with unprecedented levels of partnership between management, staff and students.

Professor Seaton added:  “It’s particularly pleasing that by nominating us for University of the Year the judges have recognised our ambitious and in many ways revolutionary reforms of the way we develop our curriculum, innovate in student learning, and support the personal development of both students and staff.”
